Agree about the survey. Those look like a lot more than gel coat cracks to me.

Hello I'm looking to by A 1968 Cal 34' butt where the main Starboard and port stays are, there are what look to be good sized stress fractures in the fiberglass (see photo), is this a big problem, should I stay clear of this boat, he is asking $20.000. the boat is fully loaded, wheel steering, radar, plotter, two VHF radios, autopilot with remote, self locking ratchets, davit's with a new 6' Zodiac, Harken roller furling for the jib, Atomic 4 engine, pressurized water, hot water heater, a new head, generator, new bottom, upgraded stays to a larger cable. The Boat looks great in and out just the cracks in the deck are making me think twice, is this a good price for this boat, can the cracks be fixed relatively easily

Marine Surveyor Needed

If I were in your shoes I would hire a good Marine Surveyor to take a look at the boat. If you can see these stress cracks now, there may be other items that you haven't seen. Once the surveyor gives you a report, not only will you have some bargaining power with the seller, but you will know what to expect in the future when it comes to needed repairs.

Better get it surveyed!

Go down below and look at the chainplate attachment point. If they are bolted to the bulkhead, there has probably been enough water damage to allow the chainplates to lift, buckling the deck and cracking the gelcoat. If that's the case, you're probably looking at having the bulkheads replaced - not an inexpensive repair. I'm not a surveyor, but that sounds like an awful lot of money for a 37 year old boat with a gas engine.
