I removed the stock aluminum tank today. Curious which model Ronco tank anyone has used. Also am considering using PVC for the exit line to the macerator which will end gas permeation problem, any thoughts?..good ..bad?

You can use PVC for a straight run, but...

It has to be well supported and also "soft coupled" with enough hose at each end to cushion shock.

Thanks Peggie.

The run to the tee that splits the deck pump out and macerator is about 2.5 feet. From the tee to the macerator is all fixed PVC. The input line from the head is the 'good stuff' that I bought a couple of years ago. If/when that needs to be replaced I'm thinking to use PVC there also. Fortunately the tank had not leaked yet, however the exhaust nipple was almost completely corroded through. I'm going from the stock size 14gal tank up to a 22gal tank or maybe a 30gal. There's plenty of room. Wadaya think?

Ronco - B171

Alan - I went with the Ronco B171 on pg 21 of the marine catalog. Got me 25 gals. As you probably already know, the fuel line comes in through the back wall of that compartment, which is one of the reasons that the existing tank isn't too deep. I positioned the angled section aft, so that it cleared the fuel line. Built an angled support out of plywood, well epoxied, to hold it steady back there. It's a tight fit at the top, but it will fit. Obviously, you need to get all your fittings and elbows on before you slide it back into position. Having already scraped knuckles doing this, I'd be more than happy to assist any way I can. Feel free to email me. TJ at Furstenau dot Net

TJ's advice...

is right on the money and helped me out quite a bit in the retrofit of my 35.5. The 25 gal. B171 is the best fit and TJ's "angled support bracket" in the aft area of the work space and the "tie down straps" that hold it all together make for a very secure installation.

Sounds fine to me except for one thing

I'd replace the tee in the the pumpout line with a y-valve, so you can close off the flow from the tank to the macerator when you have to replace the impeller or other service to the macerator.

Thanks Guys

I'll give you a shout if I run into any problems. Peggie, it appears that the inlet for the macerator is above the top of the tank which would preclude the need for a Y valve. That would mean that the pump in the macerator is self priming, am I correct? The reason I ask, the location of the tee/Y valve is in a really difficult to reach location.

Alan!! STOP!

LectraSan! All problems go away! And it only takes up about one and a half cubic feet of space. No plumbing problems like vents and it only weighs about 20 pounds. YOU can appreciate that on the race course. Did I mention that you never have to pump-out again? I love mine.

If the pump is above the tank...

You should be ok with just a tee. However, you ARE aware that you have to be at least 3 miles offshore from the nearest point of land on the whole US coastline to use the macerator legally...which means you can't dump a tank in the Sound, you'd have to be at sea somewhere on the other side of LI. That's a long trip from anywhere in the Sound. So you might want to heed Fred's advice instead of installing another tank. 'Cuz the discharge of treated treated waste from a CG certified Type I MSD is legal in the Sound...and just about everywhere else except CT, RI and about half of MA.

Thanks for the info...

...I NEVER dump anywhere. I always use the pump out. I had considered a Lectra-San before. I'm concerned that environmental laws may make them unusable in the future. I'll reconsider before I order a new tank. Thanks

On the 35.5...

you really can't get the LectraSan close enough to the head and it's all "uphill" to where there is any space at all.
