Bigger is better in this size range

Many of us single hand much larger boats, mine's a 34. Go for it.

Nice to have the extra weight

If the weather gets nasty, its nice to have the larger boat's extra weight and stabiity. The 24 is easier to trailer, but if that's not a concern and money isn't a factor, definitely go for the larger boat. Assuming self-tailing winches and roller furling on both boats, I doubt you will find much difference in ease of singlehanding (especially after your first few trips) between the two.

90 per cent of the time you're on the boat

you are at anchor or at a dock. You will appreciate the extra space and headroom of the bigger boat. I don't think you would notice the difference in handling between the 24 and 26, except the bigger boat will be more comfortable underweigh as well. Be sure to get an autopilot if you're single handing. The tiller pilots work fine. If you get a boat with a wheel, it's more expensive nd complicated, but still well worth it. You will be more likely to get crew with the bigger boat (this may be a disadvantage, as it can lead to matrimonial entanglement), and when you invite a fellow sailor or two to the boat for a beer, the 26 interior and cockpit are both great for entertaining.

Singlhanding small boats

I agree either the 24 or 26 is easy to singlehand. This task is made much easier if you have roller furler and spinlocks. See the link below for more information on this subject: http://kobernus.com/hunter260/spinlock/spinlock.html

I will charge my wife 20.00 per day for the extra

Thanks for the responce ,I am having a hard time finding one fitted with wheel controls but I can see the advantages. How do you protect the water balast from bringing mussels that are not needed in the north.I stay in Alabama in the winter and Alberta in the summer.

On a boat that size a tiller may be better

You can lift it up so it's out of the cockpit, and the autopilot costs a third of the wheel pilot. On a water ballast boat the feel you get from the tiller may tell you when to reef so you don't get overpowered. Mostly the advantage is a wide open cockpit.

Zebra muscles on Lake Erie

When we bought our H23.5 to sail both on Lake Erie and Ohio's inland lakes, I called the Ohio Sea Grant project. They recommended a couple ounces of household chlorine bleach in the ballast tank. Fair Winds, Rob S/V Kinship

Take a look at the Hunter 25

The Hunter 25 is also a great boat. Not sure there any on the used market yet but most dealers should have the boa tin stock. We have had nothing but positive feedback from our customers!
