1985 Hunter 40 - Keel

Hello Glen!

A friend of mine has a 1985 Hunter 40 and says that his keel wobbles slightly. He also gets a slight smile in the front of the keel each year. He has tightened the bolts, however this does not help. I had indicated to him that this may be a result of a problem with the wood stub....

Any opinions or history on the structural esign of the keel on this model?

Sounds like the keel needs rebedded. After that long of time, the epoxy or 5200, whatever was used by Hunter back then, has deteriorated. There is not a good flat surface to mate to. It is not a small task to take the keel off and rebed it. I am not sure what you mean describing the "wood stub". The entire keel sump should be fiberglass. Can you lend a bit more description? I have not heard of any negative history on the structural design of the keel.
