I just purchased a 1984 Oday 25 or is it a 26. Just a little history I picked up from Rudy, at D&R Marine, this morning. In 1984 Oday made a 25, the HIN ended at 2898, the 25 had 3 windows on each side of the cabin. The 4th digit in the HIN should start with a G (the number would look like this XDYG2898A84A). In 1984 Oday started production on a 26, the hull was the same size, larger rudder, and taller mast. The windows on the cabin were different also, there was only 2, one long and a smaller one in the head area. So now I look at my boat. The HIN says it is a 25, the features are of a 26. The sail has a 26 on it and the hull has 25 graphics. Rudy looked at the pictures I have posted in the 26 area and he said it look like a 26 with a 25 HIN. The real kicker is the Hull number is G2900, Go figure. Any one else in the same boat with similiar questions, let me know. EJ Tews

1985 O26

This will probably only add to your confusion, but I have an 85 O26 with the HIN - XDYM0306C685. Ben Allen

OK, Hows Bout This...

The A after the last # could indicate a preproduction prototype (try saying that 3 times fast). That is the look of the 26 (which you have confirmed this), but the HIN's still in transition between the 2 models? Maybe they put 20 out the door as a test of consumer acceptance? Just the ramblings of a guy between 2 jobs at work. 8>) Don

Hi Bill, In 1984 they changed the HIN format also, so you are on the new format. EJ

26 or 25 response

Don, That is a good possibility. Oday changed the Hull design mid year, Kinda like what Nissian did in 1986, with their Pickup. Any way, I just wanted to share in my history lesson, I hope it was informative. EJ

O25-O26 comparison

EJ, After looking at your pictures I have a few comments. First of all, I noticed the side stripe says O'Day 25 which to me says this is a good possibility. Secondly, there is an O25 right next to me at the Marina and his is just like yours in appearance. His boat is also shown on this site, way down on the list and goes by the name "4 Tenners". This gives you an outside view for comparison. Third, I noticed two other points of comparison. The v-berth hatch areas are different on the outside. Look at their placement and angle of set. There are some O26 pictures on this site and the Yahoo site that should give you a view. The other item was the entryway steps into the cabin. The O26 does have the actual steps all the way down and does not use the counter area as a step, as found on the O25. Hope this helps in your decision. Capt. Jim O26 - Tranquility Forked River, NJ

O25-O26 Followup

EJ, I went back to the photo album and did a little browsing. If you find the pictures submitted by Mike Trautman, he entered a photo of his boat labeled DOCKSIDE where it shows a great shot of the forward hatch. This will show you what I was referring to. By the way, I should have mentioned in my first response. Nice Boat! I find it amazing just how similar the late O25 and the O26 boats are. Best of luck in all your sailing adventures and enjoy the boat. I love mine. Couldn't have made a better choice. Jim O26 - Tranquility

Thanks Jim

Jim Thank you for your feedback. I just find it very interesting how the 25 has evolved in to the 26. Actually the 25 and the 26 are the same size hull, 24' 8", at least on the 1984 Model. EJ
