Does anyone knows where I can get a mast float for the head of the mast of my 170? I would like to keep the mast from turteling if the boat goes over. THGANKS--PHIL

Hobbie .........

The foot ball shape mast float is available through Hobbie Cat, They were used quite a bit for their cat boats. you could just do a web search and most likely find them some place.

As to the boat turtling. There are several post on this subject one of wich I wrote about "foaming your mast" and "test results" this seals the top end of your mast and prevents the water from rushing through the ope slot in the mast head block.

The artical could be searched here through the archives or you good go to "a sailing obsessipon" and read it there. its under the heading "tack room", scrol down to "foaming your mast"

There are several good post in this area that relates to the mast, shrouds and sailing the 170

Glen's got it right

Foaming the mast is definitely the way to go. I sealed the end of mine, never got around to the foam. It helps a great deal. I had time to swim around to the board when I got knocked down.

mast float

I have a new 146 and had not thought much about a mast float until I saw three strong teenage boys capsize a 146 and it immediately turtled. They may have been inexperienced to have capsized in the first place but none-the-less, even with all that muscle they had a very tough time righting the boat from the turtled position. I debated about foaming the mast vs a mast float and decided the mast float probably had better floatation and did not look that bad. I bought the mast float through my Hunter dealer. When it arrived from Hunter it was the Hobie "Baby Bob" (for the 146).

Noodles will float your boat

Phil - check with Hunter - that is probably the same float for both boats.
I can attest to the tippiness of the 146 - I turtled mine. I am amazed at David's experiences in never tipping his 170!! I have heard from many others that they are tippy, but David is proof that it's in the sailor too!!

I used Glenn's advice, with a sligth variation.
I slipped swim noodles down from the top of the mast, then sealed it. Also put one in the boom, though did NOT seal it.

I wanted to put a windex wind vane n the mast head, so didn't want the float.

My posts are also in teh archive.

Haven't yet tested mine, but Glenn and others have doen extensive testing, and verufiy that it works.

If you've already ordered the float, and Hunter confirms its the right one, might as well just go with that.

Enjoy!!!!
