11 Sept, 2001, a day of infamy

Many analogies are being made between the recent terrorist attacks in New
York and Washington and the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7th
1941. This is a false analogy, as the Japanese attack was what we now
term a surgical military strike against legitimate military targets with
very little civilian "collateral" damage done. It has been deemed a
sneak attack due to a quirk of fate, as it was only intended to be a
surprise attack. The attacks on Tuesday were nothing like Pearl Harbor,
their prime targets were civilian, and were intended to be sneak attacks.
However, there IS one aspect of the two incidents that I hope will prove
prophetic. Shortly after Pearl Harbor Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the
mastermind behind the attack, stated "I fear we have done nothing more
than awakened a sleeping giant." For his actions that day and in
subsequent days, he paid with his life two years later. I know that his
words are equally applicable today, and those that did Tuesday's acts
will pay the same price.
