    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Finally the boat is repaired. They actually had to fabricate a replica of the original with the Y shape connecting to the hull. The replacement Catalina Direct had needed them to cut a hole in the bottom and we didn't like that. $9000 later and two months in the yard. Ouch!

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Where was he located? Seems everything is more expensive in San Francisco Bay area these days.

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Well the boat has finally started to get worked on in the yard. Quote came in at over 5K. Wow! I got a second quote just to make sure and it was $300 more. I just hope everything will be solid after this for awhile. The boat budget or any budget needs time to rebuild after this. I suppose it...

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Engine mounts are good and the engine runs very smooth. Never feel vibration. Yard mechanic says it looked like corrosion. Maybe in the past the boat lived in a marina that had a lot electricity in the water. Shaft zincs were good also. Luckily the shaft is in good condition. I have only owned...

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Saw the boat today. Bottom looks good. The new strut is so much beefier the yard mechanic thought it must be the wrong part. The original does seem a little small. Photo attached.

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

I feel very luck it broke where it did. It could have been a lot worse. It is being hauled out at Bay Marine Boatworks in Richmond. Waiting now for the lift to be available. Fingers crossed everything else is okay.

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Hauling the boat tomorrow for bottom job and replacing the prop strut. I was able to get it from Catalina Direct. Hoping the labor isn't an absolutely ridiculous cost. Looking into the drawings of how it was originally installed looks like an involved job besides the access issues. Attached the...

Found some goodies under the forward section of sole! What are they?

I had exactly the same thing in my Ericson 35. I was afraid it would be a spout of water when I took it out...I braved it and to my joy it was slow trickle of water that came in and I fumbled around a little to find the direction it needed to go the first time. Very uneventful.

    C-38 Engine Access

No one has any ideas I guess. I was thinking maybe of cutting an access hole in the wall of the quarter berth. I need to look into it more to see if it would be enough to make that cut. If the fuel tank wasn't under the quarter berth one could get in under the cockpit sole and work. Does anyone...

    C-38 Engine Access

Has anyone come up with a better way to access anything not in front of the engine? I was replacing the heat exchange zinc on Sunday and can't believe the contortions I have to get to put a wrench on it. I would think because of this transmissions and heat exchanges are not maintained as...

    C38 Strut snapped in half!

Last time we sailed it was uneventful. Very light wind and motored back to the slip in calm water and no issues. Parked the boat went home. Next time at the boat I scrubbed the bottom we got ready to go put the boat in reverse and clunk clunk clunk. Dove in the water to look and there it was...

    Wind Instrument

I have the original wind direction and speed instruments on my 1981 C38. I would like to replace them with one Raymarine ST40 Wind instrument. Will the mast top indicators interface with this display unit? Thanks Scott

    Upgrading primary winches

I wanted to update this thread. I ended up keeping the Lewmars 48s in the primary location and installing the Harken 42s back to an area I can reach while driving. So far it has worked out great. Thanks for the help.

    Auto Pilot for Catalina 38

What have people done for installing an auto pilot in these boats. In my research so far it seems it would need to be an under deck auto pilot. Doesn't seem like there is too much room in that area. We will mostly be sailing with 2 people and need that extra set of hands...so to speak. Thanks...

    Upgrading primary winches

I agree Joe. Good idea. That way when single-handed I have ability to trim easily. Thanks Ted you are correct. I did check with the calculator that it would be okay up to 25Knts at least. At that point I would probably reef the jib any way. Thanks for the answers. I love this stuff.

    Upgrading primary winches

In my experience not having them is much more of a challenge, especially if it is windy. Just having to crank and not crank and pull. thanks for the advice from all though.

    Upgrading primary winches

Thanks Ted for the reply. Yes they will be the primaries. I have a 110 as my main headsail. I will check out the load calculator.

    Upgrading primary winches

I bought an 81 C38 and it has the Lewmar 48 3 speed winches. They are in good condition but would like to have self tailing for short handed cruising. I have a pair of Harken 42 self tailers. They came off of an Ericson 35 I owned and worked fine there. Are these big enough to replace the...
