    Rust Never Sleeps.

I do know someone who fabricates custom motorcycle frames that will redo the piece for less than what a boatyard might charge

When I looked at the bill for the work, I felt like I was getting charged $100.00 for a haircut at the local beauty school

    Rust Never Sleeps.

Saying stainless steel won't rust is like saying a Jeep Wrangler will NEVER get stuck in the snow or mud

    Rust Never Sleeps.

Well thank you everyone. I am posting another photo of the same fitting. At the lower right you can see salt deposits left over from water that was seeping out from the rusted part of the weld, and then boiled off by the heat.

    Rust Never Sleeps.

Another thing to consider is the location of the weld. The elbow is subject to considerable heat from the exhaust. The pipe, on the other hand is cooled by the seawater. This means that the two pieces will expand and contract to different degrees, resulting in further stress on the weld...

    Rust Never Sleeps.

Back in 2019 I had extensive work done on my 2003 Catalina 310, including replacing the exhaust elbow, as the weld connecting the stainless steel cooling water pipe to the cast iron elbow had cracked. I had a new elbow/pipe assembly made up entirely of stainless steel. Now the weld at its...

    Fuel pump/lift pump failure

Do you have an oil pressure gauge

    Fuel pump/lift pump failure

I don't "dig" them them either, so lets just call a spade a spade

    Fuel pump/lift pump failure

Could not help chiming in. I own a 2003 Catalina 310 with the original fuel pump. Unfortunately, the fuel pump is wired to the same alarm as the oil pressure switch, so when the buzzer and light go off, it is hard to tell which is the culprit. Starting at the end of last season, it was...

    High Seas Home Depot

While I have little knowledge of metal recycling, I somehow suspect that steel cable is harder to recycle than sheet metal, rebar, or girders

    High Seas Home Depot

Now I see why the marina in Staten Island where I used to keep my boat, removed all of the gas barbecues shortly after opening an on site restaurant

    High Seas Home Depot

IMHO, the place where it is riskiest to substitute might be electrical wiring and components, due in part to the risk of corrosion. In some cases, it could be a fire/explosion hazard. When I took the USCG auxiliary safety course, our instructor warned of such dangers if one substituted an...

    High Seas Home Depot

While the manufacturers and sellers of products labeled as marine grade would love you to think that they are the only way to go, most of us, whether due to cost or convenience, have gone the "Home Depot" route, and bought lubricants, varnishes, fasteners, cleaners, as well as mechanical or...

Big scare with new standing rigging

It wasn't the forestay that was slack. When I had new rigging made by Lockwood Boat Works, they noticed that the swivel was almost rubbing against the guide when the sail was hoisted all the way, so they cut the foils a little shorter. You can see that on the picture from August 2018. The...

Big scare with new standing rigging

What I was using was not a massive 1200 mm telephoto lens. There is one made by Canon for full frame DSLR. It weighs 36 pounds, costs over 120k, and is only made on special order. I was using a canon sx50hs "bridge" camera which is about the size and weight of an entry level DSLR/kit lens...
