    6000 lb tow vehicle

How did I miss the Dodge Durango? Starting in 2014 they get 20+ mpg combined. For the few years earlier they got 19. And... 6200 lbs towing capacity with the V6. This might be the winner except for its below-average reliability. If I can convince myself to wait a few years, I'll likely be...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

That's not been my experience. For instance now I have a Subaru forester with 1000 lb payload. With our family and gear we're at 600 lbs which leaves 400 lbs for a trailer hitch. For a 2000 lb trailer (towing capacity) at 260 lb tongue weight we'd have an extra 140 lbs of payload left over...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

Understood. The topics you describe have led to interesting debates at Thanksgiving. Folks have interesting strategies for managing them, including driving at 2 am and strategically adding weight to the back of the civic while unloading. In any case, all I'm saying is that having lots of...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

After looking at a lot of vehicles, I may end up choosing a cheap truck and trying not to drive it much beyond towing. The early-2000s Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, and Nissan Frontier with 4.0L engines are available in my area for $5000 with reasonable miles and generally get about 17-18 MPG...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

Edmonston (of Lemon-Aid fame) says that he thinks (most years of) RAM 1500 trucks are the most reliable, followed by Silverado/Sierra 1500s. What's the reason you don't think highly of RAM (Cummins) diesels?

    6000 lb tow vehicle

It may be different where you live. Here in Madison, WI there are a lot of trucks that haven't been used for much towing - many of them are for show, or were peoples' work trucks to haul tools. Also, the Jeep diesel can tow over 7,000.

Does she drop the Ford off in SoCal every fall and leave it there? Or does she take it back to NorCal?

Sorry to keep bugging you. Do you have a sense for whether the service was expensive because things kept going wrong or because it was a BMW (i.e. luxury car)?

    6000 lb tow vehicle

I'm curious about that. I wonder if I talk directly with Home Depot or Enterprise if they can make a deal. I'll check it out. My trips are likely to be 800-1400 miles, so they may not see that as favorably. I can ask though.

Thanks! Could you ballpark how much maintenance you'd expect to spend in 10 years if you got it at 150k and drove it to 250k?

    6000 lb tow vehicle

Who did you use for the rental? Enterprise allows towing your own trailer, but you have to return to the same location. The fee is $1900 per month or $450 per week. I've noted that nobody seems to be saying anything positive about any of the small diesel engines. Is that lack of experience...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

That's a thought. Has anyone, say, rented a truck to tow from one location to another and then another truck to tow back a month later?

Looks like the 2012 Silverado you have (which is closer to my price range) gets up to 18 combined. The Hybrid, though, is over 20.

    6000 lb tow vehicle

Interesting - didn't know about the cylinder shutdown on the Silverado. Thanks for the clarification - I should have stated that I want 20 MPG when not towing. I'm interested in the F150 EcoBoost. Looks like the 2.7 was introduced in 2015, so maybe if I can wait 5 years it'll be in my price...

    6000 lb tow vehicle

I'm looking to buy a boat in the next couple years and will need to upgrade to a vehicle with tow capacity of 6000 lbs for a couple of extended trips per year. My primary concerns are price (<10k), fuel economy (20+ mpg combined, so <3.5L engine), and reliability (10 years of life and <$8k in...

Looking for a practical trailer sailer.

I can rig my swing keel Mac 25 in 20 minutes. The mast is light enough I can lift it with my hands if I stand in the right position.

    Trailerable cruiser advice sought

I've got a 25, and I'm curious how you'd rig it correctly. I modified my rudder which helped with the weather helm but didn't make it point much better. I know someone who's modified their keel to give it a NACA shape. What would I do if I wanted to rig it better?

    Chrysler vs. Seaward

Interesting Cat22Sailing. What makes you say the Chrysler has better performance? Looking at their rigs, the Seaward has an SA/Disp rating of 18.5 compared to the Chrysler 16.1, suggesting that it's got more power per weight.

    Mi Amor restoration

Great thread thanks! Really enjoyed it. If you happen to have a video walkthrough of the boat at this point, that would be really interesting to see.
