WHICH SIDE DOES THE FUEL TANK COME OUT

Exterior sweating could lead to the wet plywood mounting base. But the culprit for marine crevice corrosion is moisture and the lack of oxygen, which prevents the metal's (aluminum, stainless steel) surface from forming its protective layer.

    Dynaplate

My fix for the dynaplate :) Filled the holes from the inside with thickened epoxy. Then ground out and laminated with an epoxy/fiberglass sandwich. Ugly now but will be faired and painted over.

    Dynaplate

Yes, lighting is a fickle phenomenon. Any thoughts on removing the ground bonding to my remaining metalic thru-hulls? Seems to me that if lightning were to choose one of them they would be no match to dissapate the energy and be blown out of the hull. And to combat electrolysis seems that the...

    Dynaplate

Thanks for the input. Y'all have verified my thinking as well. Karma has a cast iron keel, everything is bonded to it, at least the engine, and the few thru-hulls left that are metalic. The keel is encapuslated, however thinking that the quickest path to earth would still be the keel as the...

    Dynaplate

So my dynaplate started leaking. On Karma, it's the bump in the hull that has many coats of antifouling and therefore has been useless way before I've owned her. I've removed the device and have purchased a replacement. Question is to I install the new one and deal with another maintenance...

Adding refrigeration on an O'day 35

Good point. Been looking at the Isotherm self pumping system that replaces the galley sink through hull with an integrated condensor coil. They recommend that the compressor be located under the sink. Seems like a great alternative to an air cooled system. The forward icebox is certainly more...

Adding refrigeration on an O'day 35

Thanks, I've noticed that the portable refer/freezers have baskets for the same purpose so was thinking that would be a good approach to prevent the "lost" products. Is the freezer section inside of the Isotherm evaporator and the cooling air spilling into the remainder of the box?

Adding refrigeration on an O'day 35

This post has a few years on it. I'm getting ready to add refegeration/freezer ane was thinking the ice box near the sink, however the aft icebox would allow for more room. I've got 320 watts of solar powering 2 GC T-105s. Any "lessons learned" that you can share would be appreciated.

    New portlights

Not sure about the 1/4" tape. Here's the article that I referenced for my install: DIY: Replacing Fixed Portlights. I used 1/2" as recommended in the article.

    New portlights

Same here, except instead of butyl tape, use 3M VHB (very high bond) double-sided tape, then the Dow 795. No screws. Did that several years ago and everything's holding up well.

    Oday 34/35 shower sump

@daviddp I have the same two compartments with a limber hole between them. Guess that could be reconfigured as a shower sump. But then you'd still have the issue of the iceboxes draining into the bilge, however providing a sump for them would be an easier mod as I've already got hoses...

    Oday 34/35 shower sump

I have an '81 O'Day 34. There's no evidence that she's ever had a shower sump. The drain is very close to the hull and not accessable from the underside. Simply drains into the bilge along with the two iceboxes.

Wow. Good size piece of metal down there. Would hate to drive that into some Chesapeake mud.

    Primary Winch Upgrade

Installed the 40STs this weekend, decided to go with the winch pad. They are a great improvement over the Barients. Both the self-tailing and power. I'm kinda partial to the heavy-ass Barient winch handle. I like the feel :) Still kinda

    Primary Winch Upgrade

Thanks for the input, all. I feel better about my decisions and will consider mounting as a direct replacement without use of the winch pad. The Anderson winches are pretty sweet looking.

    Primary Winch Upgrade

Karma's primaries are the standard Barient 25s. I solo sail quite and have been looking to upgrade to self-tailing winches. I've acquired a pair of Lemar 40 STs. Upon comparison the Barient's drum size is visibly larger (11 1/2" vs 9 1/2"); however the Lewmar application chart indicates that...

    And so it begins

Ping! Hey 25, thought that I'd make a post to see how YOT's doing. Also, when's that book coming out? Pondering doing a deck recore on Karma, she's got some hollow sounding spots and cracked gelcoat areas, so thought I'd review these posting for a refresher. Planning on using Softsand and...
