    autopilot install on an H280

I got busy and had to hire a marine electrician to install it, who did a fabulous job. The guts of the system were installed out of sight behind the aft bulkhead, with cables running up to and under the pedestal. The only tough decision for me was where to have the display/control screen...

installing hatch vent w/out damaging acrylic

Only “scoring the circle” from the inside seems much more doable—thanks.

installing hatch vent w/out damaging acrylic

Thanks, just what I needed. I ordered an acrylic sheet from Amazon to practice on and desensitize myself. Think I'm going to be adventuresome and try the cutting from both sides method. It might be better to begin on the outside where I’m drilling downward, at least to get a small pilot...

    New cabin table?

The previous owner of my H280 replaced the OEM table with a smaller, oval-shaped one he made himself out of a piece of scrap teak he got from a boat yard in Anacortes....the smaller size makes it much easier to negotiate the interior of a 28 ft boat.

installing hatch vent w/out damaging acrylic

I’m about to install a Lewmar passive hatch vent and I’m getting a little nervous about cutting the required 3” hole in the acrylic of my relatively new v-berth hatch. I just bought a bimetal 3” hole saw & pilot drill bit, and I have a variable speed drill. But from what I’ve read and watched...

best places to install vents on a H280?

Thanks. I’ve come to the same conclusion--install one on the fore hatch. Lewmar makes a pretty nice one that can be retro-fitted for Bomar hatches (which Hunter used for the 280s). I also found these portlight rain covers that I might try...would essentially turn the galley and head...

    AutoPilot on Hunter 280

I have the H280 described in the thread that Greg referenced. After looking at the instructions and parts, I ended up having a marine electrician do the install. It turned out extremely well....I’m especially pleased with the location of the display, which is tricky I think...mine was...

best places to install vents on a H280?

I need to install a couple small passive (or maybe solar) vents on my H280, but--other than the forward hatch--there are few places where one can be placed w/out running into complications. Are there any H280 owners out there who have found a good location for a vent on the cabin top/ceiling...

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

Alan--the water separator is getting checked and I bought a new filter for it, as well as a new fuel filter.

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

The mechanic is working with me, he totally acknowledges now (after some initial resistance) that there's obviously a problem unrelated to "break-in”....I should note here that the rebuild did uncover a couple major problems that needed attention--e.g., new, oversized pistons were required--but...

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

Update: As everyone on this thread expected, putting another 2-3 hrs on the rebuilt engine did nothing to reduce the exhaust smoke. But it did help me resolve the color of the smoke—it’s more white than blue (I sent a video to a couple mechanics to confirm). Very discouraging…. white smoke was...

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

Thanks for the break-in instructions---they are both informative and a little funny (how many 30-minute intervals can one keep track of?).....and I can certainly use a little humor right now. Question: The manual says: "During the first 10 hours of operation, the engine should be operated...

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

Thanks guys....I was hoping to hear a different story, but suspected a problem. Gary: it did take me a while to start it up and that could account for the fuel in the water. Right now, there's only about a half-hour on the engine, so I’ll run it again today for a good hour to see if things...

How should a rebuilt Yanmar behave?

I just had a mechanic do a major rebuild of my Yanmar 2GM20F including new bearings, seals, oil pump, rod bearing, piston & rings, cylinders rebored, etc. Re-installation was completed yesterday and I took her out for a trial run today. I noticed a fair amount of fuel in the water when first...

Should I replace my old Yanmar motor mounts with OEMs or a newer design?

Tally Ho, I came across the ones on discountmarinesource.com today as well..and only ~ $8 shipping to Seattle. Much cheaper than Yanmar retail, which is $165 each, excluding shipping, according to my local Yanmar parts dealer. The part numbers are a little different than what I see in the...

Should I replace my old Yanmar motor mounts with OEMs or a newer design?

Really helpful everyone, thanks. The reason I’m changing motor mounts now is my entire engine has been pulled from the boat for a substantial rebuild (long story for another time). The mechanic doing the rebuild agrees with what has been said here..i.e., he thinks the PYIs are too solid and...

Should I replace my old Yanmar motor mounts with OEMs or a newer design?

Has anyone replaced their Yanmar motor mounts with one of these kits from PYI--or some other newer design? https://store.pyiinc.com/products/yanmar-engine-mounts?variant=28924295693 They cost ~ $200 more for a set of 4 than the OEMs for my Yanmar 2GMF. Wondering if they are worth the...

Need 2nd opinion: Cracked piston ring in a Y2GM20F?

In this diagram, I think it's one of the 3 cylinder head studs (part #6), the back one.

Need 2nd opinion: Cracked piston ring in a Y2GM20F?

As promised, some follow-up: My mechanic did a thorough inspection last week and found several problems. In order of the attached images, he found: -what appears to be long-standing leaking around one of the head bolts; -fuel leaking from the injector holder (or case? not sure what it's...

Need 2nd opinion: Cracked piston ring in a Y2GM20F?

Seems like the list of bad to awful possibilities is endless. I do trust the mechanic who rebuilt the injector pump and who will be going over everything again on Monday. Not sure if he's Yanmar trained, but he has over 40 yrs experience as a dedicated diesel mechanic (boats and semi-trucks)...
