1987 Mk II Lower Shroud U-Bolt Failure

CD sent me the non-web-listed replacement bolt that is part of their upgrade kit. other than being slightly longer it appears correct. It's the part used in this kit: https://www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/catalina-30/rigging/standing-rigging/lower-shroud-chainplate-upgrade-c-30/ I also...

1987 Mk II Lower Shroud U-Bolt Failure

Thanks Stu, got some responses, but nothing useful. CD finally answered and they say they're sending me the right one. it sounds like whatever they use in their upgrade kit they think is also the OE part. We'll see. Thanks.

    Steering drain through hull

And lastly, it appears to have solved the mysterious water in the bilge.

1987 Mk II Lower Shroud U-Bolt Failure

Had a different failure first... Mainsheet traveller block snapped in heavy winds during a small jibe and the boom went flying starboard and smacked the lower shroud and broke the U-Bolt. It was clearly corroded to begin with, and I know I should check them all...

    Steering drain through hull

Replaced it with the Marelon mushroom one. WM had it in stock. It was the 3/4" barbed thru-hull and measures 1" for the hole. Sealed it with 4200.

    Steering drain through hull

The anchor locker has the same one. I know that one leaks a little. But it is far less often under water. Plan on changing that one next. First step was to find the one putting random water in the bilge.

    Steering drain through hull

It was a 3/4 hose barb thru hull. There’s only one size WM sells in the marelon and it fit perfect. The threads OD were 1”. I used 4200 to bed seal the new one. this is the drain for the steering quadrant. The old thru hull was nylon and cracked. It was also pretty loose when we removed it. It...

    Steering drain through hull

Want to replace this. I have a 87 mkII. is there a standard size thru hull? assuming this was original? looks like about 1” to me. But I’d have to get my calipers and/or pull it first. Do you recommend just pulling it first then go search for the replacement? Or can I get something ahead of...

Haul Out - Help with my shaft - SoCal

Well, despite all the warnings, we were able to get the shaft out of the coupler using the $50 tool from CD. And then, with a hacksaw blade and some chisels, we peeled the old cutlass bearing out. No set screws found in this strut. Pressing the new cutlass went in smoothly. Kept it on ice...

    PSS replacement job

I had an old PSS seal that I wanted to change out. I ordered a new one based on recommendations from the manufacturer. When I went to install it, I noticed the rubber bellows are different than the original. The new one has an insert that goes over the stern tube and the bellows goes over that...

    Stern vents - screen options?

I’ve had Rat issues a couple times in the last 6 months and have determined they get in through the air vents on the stern. It’s just a big hole there and I’d like put some kind of screen in them. Has anyone done this or give me some creative design ideas? For now they are stuffed with steel wool.

    Cutlass bearing strut set screws

No, he just said 3 and 9 o’clock. I assume that means one on each side.

    Cutlass bearing strut set screws

I'm going to be attempting to change my cutlass bearing out in a few weeks. I've read that some struts have set screws, and some don't. Out of curiosity, I called Catalina and talked their very informative Warren in tech support and asked if he knew if my 87 MkII had them. He explained that...

Thanks for that. Interesting. I have an endoscope camera as well, and should look at everything underneath my Edson wheel.

    PSS DRIPLESS question

I know this is late, but for reference, I have the same year 87 mkII boat and I measured the outside diameter of my stern tube to be 1.6" PYI (PSS) told me to order: Part number for standard speed seal for a 1" shaft and 1 1/2" stern tube is 01-100-112. The bellow will stretch up to an 1/8" so...
