    At a Crossroad

Allright Ed K! I gave it some deep thoughts over a Dark 'n Stormy and you know what. . . i might just sail it down to La Paz. I found a potential source for a used rudder close by and I'm gonna go for it. Thanks for the kick

    At a Crossroad

It is time for me to part with my 25' swing keel. I am faced with challenges however and need some feedback please. The situation: Boat is on an undersized trailer in San Diego. It has a broken rudder which I cannot fix myself. I have not yet found a suitable replacement within my...

    Ready to Roll

I know E-man, I'm not totally satisfied but it was the best I could do considering time/budget. I really only plan on hauling it one way to San Diego then putting my boat back in the water. I will for sure be taking it easy though!

    Ready to Roll

hauling when I tow it distance I plan on stashing everything from the inside (sails, tools, parts etc. ~200lbs) in the v-berth. However, I want to keep the load on the trailer as light as possible too. I am already about 500 lbs over the limit on the trailer:eek: I tried to compensate by the...

    Ready to Roll

This is the first time in the 5 years I have owned my O'Day that it has been on a trailer! Bitter sweet I must say but transition is on the horizon. I bought the trailer off a guy who used it once for his 22' wing keel. I had to have a welder modify/reinforce to get my 25' on there but I think...

    Mast Wiring/Mast Light/Coax

When I replaced the wiring in my mast, there was a wad of foam stuffed down to the spreaders from the masthead. It had a length of string tied to the sheave bolt so I pulled it out easily. I did not put it back it back in and that has haunted me to this day. The foam kept the wires from...

Sailing vessel this is US Navy War Ship

Great dialogue Brian D!! Thuroughly enjoyable. I too have lost motor power off the kelp in SD. In a fishing skiff off La Jolla, it was dead calm then too :) Aloha

    O'Day center board lift line

I went to my local rigging guy and he had an old wire to line halyard that was the perfect size. I borrowed a swage tool and it seems to be working alright. Good luck. p.s. Mine is the 1976 25' and the line comes into the cockpit just below the traveler and cleats off to port.

Tip: Cool things to help you post

Right on BrianD. People in my industry are always amazed that I have the 'degree' memorized in MS. Although, just now it wouldn't accept. I wonder if that is a product of the 'quick reply'. Anyway, write 4 years worth of Biology term papers and character map is your best buddy! Cheers, BnB

    Pendant line on 85% jib

Don: I do not have a fractional rig. Masthead. Other points of clarity: I also have a 110% jib that needs the new genoa cars. Right now they are the pin type that slide on a track bolted to the outer side of the cockpit coaming. However the blocks themselves sit too high and therefore give...

Using on mainsail, reefing, cant head into the wind

Trimming while singlehanding Hey Kevin, IMHO, if you are trimming the jib nice and tight for both close hauled and beam reaching I would say that is not OK. Sail trim is fairly dynamic and singlehanding requires a slight bit of multitasking :)

Using on mainsail, reefing, cant head into the wind

When to reef is easy, sooner than later! :D Sounds like you need more help with the 'how' of reefing. What didn't look right about your reef? There are the reef lines in the main belly of sail that serve to keep it clean after the reef points, luff and leech, are set. On my main sail you can see...

    Pendant line on 85% jib

Don et al.: Thanks for weighing in. All good info for my sailing DB, much appreciated. I think that I will continue to ride my horse; a tired girl, but reliable. :) As Stu pointed out, it is very valuable to have that extra vis below the sail while tooling around the Bay. If a bay sailor...

    Pendant line on 85% jib

Re: jib sheet lead angle I have fixed jib leads. I have entertained the thought of a track but $$$. . . It would be nice to have less heel since I mainly fly the 85 in 15+ knots. The boat sails much better when she is flat.

    Pendant line on 85% jib

Don, The 85% headsail on my O'day 25 has a wire line about 18" that hooks from the tack of the sail to the base of the headstay. I am taking the sail to a loft for general maintenance and was wondering about switching the pendant to the head of the sail. Will moving the pendant line change...

    Charging

A test & the zinc Taylor, exactly the info I was looking for. I have no zincs associated with my electronics so I feel like I have stray current in the boat. I wanted to connect my boats' current to that of the marinas'. Is that even an issue? The corrosion of my interior electronics due to...

    Charging

The panel I plan on using is a trickle charger type, 135 mA. I can't recall if it has a diode built in. I hope so, I don't want a 'useless' panel! The reason I brought up a zinc anode is that I don't want to encourage corrosion by clipping the (-) of the panel to the (-) busbar. I also saw a...

    Attaching a whisker pole

I have been able to get away without a topper or a fore guy. One can effectively use the lazy sheet and the active sheet to keep the pole under control.

    Charging

This is what I am working with. The pic is looking forward; port red 8awg is the panel and starboard red 8awg is battery. There are fuses in the panel (15 amp) and the 16 gauge wires. No battery switch. Distance from the bar to the battery is ~3' and the solar wire is ~6'. I think I have the...
