New halyard on Selden in-mast furling mainsail

I bought the boat last November and have been systematically replacing all the running rigging. Most ropes were serviceable but on the last part of service life. The main halyard is HMPE with a polyester cover. It appears to be at least 10 years old on a 15 year old boat. My concern is material...

New halyard on Selden in-mast furling mainsail

I have a Hunter 38 with Selden in-mast furling mainsail. I got new jib and main sails, yay! I want to install a new halyard too. The halyard has a spliced eye secured to the furler swivel by what appears to be a clevis captured by a split pin. I can remove the split pin (removed in pics below)...

Potable water leaking into bilge - 06 H38

My A/C condensate and refrigerator/freezer condensate drains to the bilge. The A/C generates a lot of condensate when it runs.

    1st Haul/Bottom Job/Cutlass Bearing - Any gotchas?

Thought of another item: sacrificial anode. Good time to change the shaft anode while you are on stands. BTW....a cutlass bearing is not something you want to go cheap on. It's mission critical. Johnson Duramax is a respected manufacturer. Johnson Cutless Water-Lubricated Sleeve and Flanged...

    1st Haul/Bottom Job/Cutlass Bearing - Any gotchas?

+1 on the rudder bearings. The rudder is the primary lifting foil on our boats and gets subjected to a lot of force. You don't want it to have any slop. My rudder had osmosis/blisters, but the hull was clear. You might want a contingency for rudder osmosis treatment. Stuffing box can be done in...

Yanmar / Kanzaki gearbox dipstick threads broke

I paid $37 plus $10 shipping for the Yanmar part. It appears to be the exact same material as the original. The boat is a 2006, so the original lasted 15 years. I expect the same life span out of the replacement. I'm sure the milage will vary and depending on duty cycle.

Yanmar / Kanzaki gearbox dipstick threads broke

Documenting for future inquirers. I have a Yanmar 3JH4E with the Kanzaki KM35P gearbox (transmission if you prefer). The oil dipstick broke off at the threads with the threads left behind in the gearbox! Apparently this is a common occurrence because the parts guy said they send them out...

RUNNING THROTTLE UP OUT OF GEAR

Right.... The single lever throttles have a button to press that allows you to increase the throttle without engaging the transmission/gearbox. On my Hunter 38 it's a black button at the base of the lever like the one shown here. Press in (maybe firmly if it hasn't been used in a while) and hold...

    Hunter 38 Refrigerator

This page on the Novakool website gives you the product dimensions and compares to the other leading brands dimensions: Isotherm, Dometic, Norcold, etc: Product Specifications — Nova Kool Manufacturing ULC After a cursory look, none jumped out as a drop-in replacement. Isotherm CR130 is close...

    Hunter 38 Refrigerator

I have the refrigerator and the freezer and happen to snap the model info for both. I have a 2006 Hunter 38 so I can tell the fridge was replaced at some point since it's manufacture date is 2014. I also have this source for parts: Nova Kool

    BVI Charters

Thanks for all of the great feedback. I reserved a 2019 Bali 4.1 for a ten day charter with Conch Charters. I'll report back after the trip to let you know how it goes.

    BVI Charters

I'm looking at a 10 day catamaran charter in May 2022 getting quotes from several companies. Conch Charters had the most competitive price among the quotes I've received so far. Anyone have experience with this company? Their quote seemed to cover the things in other quotes: charter...

    Anchor locker confusion

Remove the shackle and the thimble from the rope rode. Splice the rode to the last chain link. The articles above or youtube videos are good resources for the splice. The splice will go through the windlass without having to remove the "Simpson-Lawrence" cover. It does look like time for a new...

Looking for Hunter 38 on the upper Chesapeake bay for comparison

Same boat and engine. 2006 model year. I had an issued with a lot of vibration at low RPM. I just bought the boat this past November. It idled very rough at around 900 RPM with the shifter in neutral. Ran smooth without vibration once I shifted to forward or reverse and gave some throttle. Also...

    Disassemble cabin reading light

There isn't a manufacture name anywhere to be found.. The plastic base is marked "SWITCH" to indicate which way to align the on/off switch when installing the light. The base is marked "UP" on the opposite side. I guess it would matter if mounting on a vertical location.

    Disassemble cabin reading light

This one is resolved. Documenting for future owners. Some light prying with a plastic putty knife loosened the fixture enough to be removed. It is a twist-lock fit. A plastic base is screwed to the plywood backing over the headliner material. Three tabs on the reading light metal fixture follow...

    Disassemble cabin reading light

Thanks for the reply. I tried twisting and pulling as much as I could without stressing or cracking the thin plywood backing. I ended up cutting the headliner material around the base of the reading light just to get the piece down and out of the way. Still don't see any screws either on the...

    Disassemble cabin reading light

I'm working on the headliner in a 2006 Hunter 38. There are some reading light fixtures in the aft cabin and v-berth that I can't figure out how to take down to remove the headliner material. Anyone know how these are uninstalled? They are attached to a light piece of plywood behind the liner...

    Shore water feed

Ditto what others have said. Make sure the manifold valve is lined up to allow water to enter the system from shore water. Also check the gasket where the hose seats to the shore water connector. The male hose connector may be slightly out of round if it was stepped on or otherwise squished...
