    Reefing Method Question

Alan, Thank you, I came across this site in another post and I think it speaks to issues I was having comprehending the task. i.e. Depending on your rig and configuration, it will alter how you approach the task. e.g. If you have a reefing hook, if lines are lead to cockpit, etc. Pineapple Sails

    Reefing Method Question

Thanks to all for your answers and points of view. They were very much welcomed. The boat is new to me, and larger than my previous one, so it's complicated for me to understand. Of course models, equipment, rigging, and personal preferences all have a part in how reefing is completed. I am...

    Reefing Method Question

Okay, understood. I feel that I in my configuration I have two bad parts of possible good solutions. I will live with it for now, use it, until I understand my needs and wants better. Then, I can either move to all lines to cockpit, or all lines at mast. Both will require new hardware.

    Reefing Method Question

Alan, Okay, so that would explain why some never touch their topping lift. i.e. It's set to a height they are comfortable with so there is no need. I would think that would make raising the main a little harder at the end, but that may also be why they often winch the last foot of raising the...

    Reefing Method Question

Stu, I don't understand. My two-person procedure is the way I tried to simplify what is from the factory. I believe the boat is set up for a double-line slab reefing system, with the main halyard lead to the cockpit. The only way to reef this mainsail is to run between the mast and the...

    Main hard to raise

Ward, This was awesome! I have been doing this all last year and making it much harder on myself by not releasing the mainsheet. I am embarrassed to say, I haven't been using the mainsheet or traveler at all, and just broad-reaching back and forth. I will try this next weekend,

    Reefing Method Question

I am trying to learn how to reef my mainsail with my current setup on a 1990 MKII TR. I have a topping lift to support my boom, no vang or boom kicker. My main halyard leads to my cockpit, but everything else appears to happen at the mast. 1. Is it normal to release your topping lift once...

Anyone Remove their Hood Furler Drive Unit?

Update: Furler overhaul worked perfectly from CDI. They shipped everything I needed to re-install it and it worked like a dream. Thank you all very much for the help and advice in getting it off and back on.

Recommended Instruments for Close Coastal Cruising (Day Sailing)

Update: I completed my trip this weekend, which took me from Riverside NJ down the Delaware to the C&D canal for an overnight at Summit North Marina, then the next day we motored across the Delaware Bay to Cape May NJ. Total voyage was 18 hours and 95 NM. The last four hours was very choppy...

    Rudder Question: Crack in Fiberglass

Follow up: I finally had some time off from work this week and was able to apply my idea of a bandaid. I used three layers of 10 oz fiberglass weave over the grounded out section, and one layer over the leading edge to cover up some additional pockmarks. I scrubbed the amine blush off, then...

    Rudder Question: Crack in Fiberglass

I am looking to re-glass the post for this season. I will order the new rudder from Foss, but I want to move the boat to a new location and use it. I assume it will take time to have it built, especially during covid.

    Rudder Question: Crack in Fiberglass

I sanded and grinded through cracks today on rudder. I am hoping to epoxy and cloth over damage, then use some fairing compound, then epoxy barrier and bottom paint. Thoughts?

    Issues removing cutless bearing.

Bearing is replaced by professional. He did not indicate what he thought went wrong, but he had to install set screws as he thinks my actions stretched the strut diameter. He did not say that it was “bent” or needed any additional work. I dropped the prop off so he could install that when he...

    Issues removing cutless bearing.

Ha! You’ll have to buy it from the insurance company. But I’ll sink it someplace very shallow. ;) P.S. StrutPro believes the shaft was not straight in the strut and suggested disconnecting it, which I didn’t do.

    Issues removing cutless bearing.

Archimedes Quotes Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. There are no set screws in this strut, so that waas not the issue. I soaked the strut with PB a few weeks before attempting the removal and I still screwed it up. I even made a...

    Issues removing cutless bearing.

Nah, they’re in there pretty good. I thought of using new collets to reverse the process, but I spoke to a guy next to me who gave me the name of a professional. I texted him and he is on it. I’ve got so many jobs to do before getting it back to the water, I can’t waste any more time on it.

    Issues removing cutless bearing.

Hello, I screwed the pooch on this removal. I finally removed this bearing using 4' length of pipe as a lever. I soaked the thing for a week in PB Blaster, but it didn't help so I decided to just keep ratcheting away until it came fully out. Now, of course, the collets are jammed in the strut...

I kind of suspected, but thought it was a coincidence. Thank you for the clarification, the gentlemen that talk me through it was very nice and non alarmist.

    Rudder Question: Crack in Fiberglass

Thank you. I bought the boat before last summer and didn't notice any issues... but I just had it sodablasted and now I see the crack; actually I just noticed it while working to remove the bearing, so I was very close to the area, but I didn't notice it when inspecting the hull post...

    Rudder Question: Crack in Fiberglass

Hello, While working on removing my bearing I noticed a crack in the rudder that looks like it needs repair. Any advice or suggestions? Thanks,
