    Solar panel connection-need advice

I would agree that IF it was only solar that was ever giving a charge, a dual output solar controller may be a fair option, but when one has other charge sources, an acr makes the most sense for dependable multiple bank charging for ALL sources.. its my opinion that just because two solar...

Let’s build a Sailors Music Playlist...

I agree.... the concept of the thread starter is the entire problem.... we should all just list any and all songs that we like, regardless of what they are about, and clutter the thread with off topic songs.. maybe we all could just download our ipod playlists and most everything out there...

Let’s build a Sailors Music Playlist...

new “country music”..... at the very least, these words form an oxymoron.... more properly, it would read, "the new music that people who dont know any better refer to as country".... And, some of the songs that have been listed on this thread have NOTHING in them about boats, oceans...

    Gasket Sealant on Thermostat?

when you tighten the bolts for the t-stat housing and add water, it will snug it in there as the lip of the gasket swells slightly.

    Condensed for your inconvenience

One of the things I did to create ventilation was to install a "bathroom" fan (2 photos below).... I installed a Vetus mushroom vent (so that I could close it completely), covered it on the outside with a screened cowl vent to prevent rain and spray from entering.... then I built a small fan box...

Engine alarms: If you have one, how is it wired?

there you go! depending on how the glow plug system is wired, its not good to push that many amps thru the keyswitch anyway. (some systems dont have a GP relay, but are wired direct thru the button/switch).. I like the buzzer to sound when the key is in the ON position with the engine NOT...

Let’s build a Sailors Music Playlist...

I have always thought about making a playlist of songs that refer to boating in one way or another... I prefer a bit more upbeat songs, but there are MANY songs about sailing, boating and being on the ocean that are great... I dont know how to post youtube vids, but I know how to post links...

    Condensed for your inconvenience

you can use a dehumidifier to remove the moisture from the air (when you have a power source) but without positive ventilation, smells will still build up AND any mold/mildew spores that may get a start, will stay trapped in the boat to multiply at will wherever they land in a crack or crevice...

    Condensed for your inconvenience

Geographical location of the boat makes some difference in how much condensate one has to deal with. here in the NW, we had a problem and then we fixed it. if one takes the time to really understand what causes the condensate, and has the means and ambition to remedy it PROPERLY, the first...

How much wind is too much?

there are so many variables to consider with the question, that there is little that can be said in answer without having more information, or having a specific question to answer. assuming the boat is out and cruising away from the dock, it ALL matters... and the only simple answer that will...

    Unobtainable fairlead?

it would seem that the fixed bullseye lead would be perfect there... so im not sure why it may be preferable to have it articulate. the lead on the line to the drum is so slight that there would be very little friction, and my view of it from the photo, shows the line could nearly run outside...

iPad Navionics file to sd card then to chart plotter.

yes, it can be done... but I learned that you need to check the storage capacity of the card, vs the size of card that your plotter can use. most plotters have a max size of the card they can read, and even though the file may not exceed the plotters limits, the card itself may, in which case...

    Sad Death

Death happens ALL the time, but a death like this one is such a sad occurrence because it was completely needless and could have been so simply avoided... one doesnt get to be a technician without knowing about the dangers of carbon monoxide. we hear of deaths ALL the time from carbon monoxide...

    Engine problems

I agree with everything.... although I was under the impression the mechanic quoted him for a rebuild, and not just a valve job.... as for buying a used engine, in my opinion, the only time it makes sense to replace a worn out but re-buildable engine with a "good" used one, is if you plan to...

Tiller swing takes up space in cockpit...

I agree that on a mac, the tiller handle doesnt need to be as long as it is. if the boat is balanced, and you know when to let out some mainsheet in a gust, you can steer the boat with 2 fingers on the tiller... on a 26s you could shorten the tiller and set in either rear corner of the cockpit...

    Engine problems

as a mechanic that has done a few boat engines for hire, I dont think the price is too far out of line... but that depends on if the boat is in the mechanics yard, if the mechanic is traveling to the boat, or if the customer brings the engine in on a pallet... anyone in business doing a job for...
