    Fan Belt/Impeller

The heat exchanger will likely be a task for a future year ... for the first time through on that one I'm going to want to have a Yanmar mechanic onboard with me walking me through the steps.

    Fan Belt/Impeller

In my case, with the Yanmar 3JH5E I have absolutely no excuse. The impeller pump cover faces forward completely unobstructed. The fan belt comes off with three bolts loosened. One of the three bolts is a tightening bolt on the top of the alternator. This is arguably the most wisely...

    Fan Belt/Impeller

The impeller is definitely getting replaced ... I should have never let it go this long and I think I got really lucky on that front. I just spoke to my local shop and they obliquely indicated it should have been 2-3 years on the belt although some will go 5-6 years. I think they were politely...

    Fan Belt/Impeller

I've just crossed 5 years and 500 hours on my Yanmar 3JH5E. I'm pretty sure I'm dealing with the original belt and original impeller. I've not had any significant issues with engine performance but I have noted that when running WOT, the temperature does seem to be about 10-20 degrees hotter...

Flexible Solar Panel on Bimini - Backing?

Dave - I read Maine Sail's article and it prompted me to have the conversation with Renogy regarding fires, the bimini support, etc. It also spurred several of the extended conversations with local expertise in canvas and electronics. Most of the folks here have done one season with the...

Flexible Solar Panel on Bimini - Backing?

I watched that video. The Shelter-Rite intrigued me but I wasn't sure whether I should buy enough to have a full sheet under each panel and have about 1 inch extra on each side. I thought about cutting holes at the grommets to allow the bungee cord to go through both the Shelter-Rite and the...

Flexible Solar Panel on Bimini - Backing?

I am planning to install two Renogy 175 watt flexible solar panels on my bimini this summer. After numerous detailed conversations with several local canvas professionals and marine electronic professionals, the consensus is that I should keep it simple for the first few months if not the first...

Catalina 385 / Golf Cart Batteries?

Its a good question as well as an honest question ... right now we have lead acid batteries (original Catalina issue) and when we come back to dock from a long day sailing or after several days on the mooring, especially on hot humid nights, the gassing of the batteries recharging sets off our...

Catalina 385 / Golf Cart Batteries?

I sent an email to Trojan Sales to see about pricing and availability. I have to make my decision by tomorrow (my distributor does bulk purchasing on the first of the month). So we'll see if I get an answer tomorrow. If not, I will spend the next five years figuring out my battery compartment...

Catalina 385 / Golf Cart Batteries?

Interesting ... that one might work ... I have to measure for height and check price/availability ... how did you find that?

Catalina 385 / Golf Cart Batteries?

Thank you for the suggestion ... I need AGM so I looked at the Trojan T105. Its listed as 10.3" long so I think it will be too long. The box is about 19.5" long and 8.375" wide. Height would be very close but I think the way its engineered I might be able to accommodate the height.

Catalina 385 / Golf Cart Batteries?

Its time to upgrade my 4D batteries on my 2016 Catalina 385. I had really wanted to convert the 2 4Ds to 4 6V Golf Cart Batteries but the pre-fabricated battery boxes the 4D batteries sit in appear to be about 1 inch too short to accomodate Golf Cart battery dimensions. While the standard 4D...

Catalina keel and structural impact of sitting on the bottom

The keel will compress the soft mud and make itself a hole. It sounds like you are talking about 3”-6” of slurry ... if so there will be no pounding. You do need to be aware of intakes ingesting muddy water.

questions on generator on 2014 385

May I ask where you are thinking for the install on the boat and roughly your budget? We have a 2016 385 and I’m intrigued.

    Fiberglass Scratches and Overall polish

Actually both polish and compound but what I’m really looking for (and I did a poor job in the post) is whether one of the brands is an outright leader today ... it’s time to replenish my stock ... I started as a 3M, migrated to Fleetwax, now Meguires but I can’t figure out which direction I...

    Anti-fouling wax

Does someone want to retire rich? Invent an anti-fouling wax for use between the edge of the bottom paint and the top of the boot stripe. This wax would be impervious to sea water and wouldn’t wear off. Just spent my day cleaning the sea water staining primarily from the heeling in the slip...

    Battery Planning Time

Wow, thank you both. As a long time member of this group, I revere Maine Sail's material and completely blanked on it. Between your two responses, I have everything I need for my "off-season" research and projects. I'm not sure if our rules permit anyone weighing in on the Trojan T-145, but...
