Hmmm maybe they use Oats as the basis of Synthetic oils.

Thus my engine is Gluten free.

All seriousness aside...

German Chemists developed Synthetics in WW II.

My Guess from Coal.

Today they start with Methane , thus eliminating the Wax/Crud from Crude oil distillation

Add the magic of Chemistry to formulate a tight range specification on Viscosity.

No Wax/Crud in the burn of your oil, less Carbonized deposits in your Exhaust.

Jim...

Thread dirft: oats don't have gluten but they often come into contact with wheat on the farm, gluten free oatmeal ensures there is no contact (my daughter is gluten intolerant, even a little bit makes her very ill).
Thread drift? We started with a simple question about synthetic vs regular oil and now we're on gluten free oats? This is what happens in the winter, on a cold weekend.

T4 is a conventional oil, just "new and improved.
Was able to purchase Rotella T4 motor oil, 15W - 40, online from Walmart; it was not available locally. Price was $21.70 including delivery & tax.

I’ve had success getting Rotella T3 at Tractor Supply. They stock it. Was $16/gallon in October
