Hello
The PO has been using 15/40 oil. We are on the Great Lakes (Ontario). What do others use for their equipment? Thanks

Spectacular avatar picture!

Wouldn't the answer be what the manufacturers recommend, rather than what anybody else is doing, or, as you even said, what your PO did?

Fischer Panda 6KW generator oil grade from owner's manual (attached) page 67: The first oil change should be carried out 35 hours after running time. Thereafter every 100 hours. SAE 30 is to be used for temperatures over 20°C and SEA 20 for temperatures between 5°C and 20°C. Viscosity SAE 10W or 10W-30 is laid down for temperatures below 5°C. Required oil: See Table E.2, “Operating Resources,” on Page 92 and Table E.4, “Technical Data Engine,” on Page 99.Yanmar 4JH4E oil grade:

Yanmar 4JH4E oil grade: Internet search for a free download came up empty so suggest purchasing a service manual Yanmar Marine Diesel Engine 3JH4E, 4JH4E, 4JH4-TE, 4JH4-HTE Service Repair Manual – Service Manual Download (servicemanualbit.com) This will get you close from the service manual on this site Yanmar 3JH4BE Engine Service manual PDF View/Download, Page # 19 (all-guidesbox.com), which is the same for my Yanmar 4JH3TE.

I have been using shell Rotella 15W 40 for my Yanmar 3YM30 and for my Fisher Panda 42/since the boat was
new and never need to add oil in between oil and filter changes.

Yanmar 4JH4E oil grade from operator manual page 32-33:

API Service Categories CD or higher, SAE Viscosity: 10W30, 15W40. Engine oil 10W30 and 15W40 can be used throughout the year. Select the oil viscosity based on the ambient temperature where the engine is being operated. See the SAE Service Grade Viscosity Chart (Figure 8). 4. Yanmar does not recommend the use of engine oil “additives.”
