Out on the water with @LeslieTroyer and his wife. Looking to get a little water time aboard Mahalo amid home task schedule, like Les remodeling a bathroom under the guidance of his daughter. A brave man to take that job on.

AM track paces us as we head south down Possession Sound.

Poulsbo will be our first port of call. The overcast sky’s weeped as a 6-7 knot SW breeze moved us silently with the current at 3.5 knots.

Breezes die as the wind begins to clock around to the North. We fired up the iron genny pushing the current out of our way. Poulsbo calls us.

As we wind our way through Agate Passage into Liberty Bay we are reminded that there is a landing strip. A 2 passenger float plane buzzes overhead going to beat us to Poulsbo.

Arrival. Tied up and night fees paid time to explore the town.

Sun separates the overcast and a cup of coffee “Velkommen’s til Poulsbo” at the Viking Brew.

The marine consignment shop ‘Longship Marine’ is across the street and it shouts “I have treasures you need to see!”

An electric home built for 2 on a trailer. A bit narrow abeam. Usage might be limited to bird watching in what was once known as Dog Fish Bay.

A Barient winch well broken in, yet serviceable.

Nothing calls my wallet from my pocket so I head across the street to check out the marine museum. Closed on Tuesday drat. Evidence of the museum’s activities during Covid is on display. They have completed the refurbishing of the Hyak pilot house.
The Hyak was considered the most beautiful of the “mosquito fleet” steamers. She ferried residents of the Poulsbo area to Seattle twice a day.

The one problem we discovered about visiting a community after Covid, the days of restaurant service have changed. Only 3 of the food establishments were open limiting our options for a Tuesday night ashore meal. But we are adventurers and having searched the town street by street, discovered the Slippery Pig. We enjoyed good food, beer and friendship. The essential cruising experience.

Still boatless. We just spent a week bike riding, kayaking, and touring harbors and rivers in my 20hp 12ft RIB. We got an Airbnb with water view and got our "fix" of salt air in eastern RI and South Coast of MA. This drone shot was looking south from Sakonnet Point in Little Compton RI. Wonderful area, and still unspoiled.

It is a step forward and one back on preparing Hadley for service.

After the rainfall on Monday night I arrived early to get my gear for the cruise. I discovered water on the counter top, dripping from my renewed window. Damn. Now need to remove and carry back to glass shop for repair. Glass guy said bring it in we will fix it.

This way I’ll get to see how the butyl sealed the window frame to the boat.

It is always something with a boat.

After doing the inaugural Five Forts Race on the Patapsco earlier this year with my dad, my wife wanted to see the forts too. We passed by Fort McHenry, the most up-river of the forts -

So, I’ll admit I’m a terrible father. Terrible in the fact that I let my know everything about everything sons take a “hit” every now and then. I simply asked my youngest son if he could raise the jib for me. “Sure pops I got this” was his reply, and off he went to the mast. He’s never sailed a day in his life…again I’m a terrible father. Matthew, my son is a smudge potter motor head, jet ski enthusiast, and hair on fire type of young man on Lake Norman in NC. He owns the boat shown below.

I didn‘t exactly cover the simplistic raising of the headsail, other than suggesting it was the blue halyard. Matt’s idea of a safe hauling looked like this:

Thank God he’s twice as strong as I am. I then offered some verbal assistance to just pull on the halyard where it departs the mast and forget about the winch until the last few feet. So he continues to muscles the halyard around the winch, through the cleat, ties it off and says…”how’s that“? I waited for another hour before actually telling him about the result, shown below:

All in all, the boat moved upwind reasonable we’ll regardless of sub-superhuman efforts to trim appropriately. The last thing I would have wanted to be is overly critical, and just let things as they were. My son became a sailor this day, my retiree best friends and his girlfriend could not provide enough accolades for Matt’s efforts. His hair caught fire on this day.

I guess I wasn’t really a bad Dad this day.

My wife finally finished making a frame for a painting that her cousin Peter Cole made for her birthday last year. To be fair, it took her a while to find the perfect pieces of driftwood.

She also picked the perfect spot in our dining room to hang it...directly above a cabinet from Bali that is made from recycled fishing boat teak.

Thanks Will! My wife and her cousin will be psyched to hear your comments on the painting and frame. My daughter will enjoy your comments on the cabinet (she's the one who found it) and the sculpture (I think she made that in 8th grade).

Phil, does your wife's cousin have an online presence? Clearly a professional artist, I'd love to see more.

My daughter is definitely enjoying her job as the science outreach coordinator for Malama Pupukea Waimea foundation. Here's one of her new friends that she has seen in the same basic area for 3 days in a row. He's some type of frog fish. My daughter told me the longer name over the phone, but I can't pronounce or spell it :)

Very nice TomY... You took a Panorama shot by sitting the camera then turning the boat. While my iPhone stitches a shot together, I like you technique. You even get a gentle breeze jostling the flag.
The silence was perfect.
