    I just bought a C30 yesterday!!

Congratulations on the new boat. I have a Catalina 27 and really like it. We just finished a long day of sailing today. I've become a fan of Sam Holmes too.

    Aging Diesel Fuel

Thanks everyone. I guess I'm just more used to gasoline and how it deteriorates and gums up an engine. Sounds like that's not the case with diesel. At this rate, my kids will inherit a boat with a full tank of fuel.

    Aging Diesel Fuel

Hello, Yes, on Champlain. It has been a great lake for sailing. Sounds like you haven't had any problems with old diesel so that's good news. Thanks for the response.

    Aging Diesel Fuel

Hello, I bought a Catalina 27 last year which has a Universal 5411 diesel inboard. The previous owner was nice enough to fill the tank for me. As you probably know, this engine is like the Prius of diesels and barely uses any fuel and at the end of this second summer of sailing, I'll probably...

    U-bolt Chainplates

Makes sense. I thought the chainplate issue was partially accelerated by corrosion from saltwater but it sounds like it was just an overall design issue impacting all boats of that vintage. That's impressive that they would reach out to you 22 years later and provide that kind of usage data...

    U-bolt Chainplates

Thanks, Joe. I'll check for those backing plates next time I'm out next time on the boat. Hopefully, it has already been done. I feel a little better that the boat has been in freshwater its whole life. I'll look for a rigger in my area too for a rigging inspection, @sail sfbay. Thanks for...

    U-bolt Chainplates

Oh, man. That sounds scary, Roy. I'm glad that you were able to recover from that with minimal damage. Sounds like it could have been much worse.

    U-bolt Chainplates

Hi, I was reading an article on Practical Sailor about the most common issues and problems with Catalina 27s and he mentioned that owners should check the lower shroud U-bolt chainplates to see if they have been upgraded. A number of the original fittings have failed, causing the rig to go over...

    Bimini for Catalina 27

I am measuring for the width of a new Bimini and not sure if I should install the attachment point of the Bimini in the general vicinity of green or red arrow. The green is the elevated part of the deck (if you can't tell from the photo)

    Bimini for Catalina 27

Thanks for the great responses. I'm going to shop around a bit more. A local canvas maker wants $1,800-$2,000 and that's just not in the budget right now.

    Bimini for Catalina 27

That's an awesome bimini, Roy. I could sit all day underneath that.

    Bimini for Catalina 27

I have an 82 model and wanted to get some opinions on whether a Bimini would be at all practical on this boat. It has the split backstay and traveler at the end of the boom so I'm concerned there is really no place to put it and it will get in the way. I would probably just use it on the mooring...

    Water Pump Gasket

I replaced the raw water pump today and it went really well. For anyone else out there with the later model Sherwood here and you want to replace it with a "drop-in replacement" Oberdorfer with no modifications needed, then you want Oberdorfer model n202m-908 and buy it from Depco Pump in...

    Water Pump Gasket

Thanks. I was leaning toward not using the Permatex. Did you have any trouble getting the old bolts which mount the pump to the engine block out?

    Water Pump Gasket

I'm going to be putting in a new Oberdorfer water pump on my Universal 5411 to replace a Sherwood pump this weekend. The new pump comes with a gasket which sits between the pump and engine block. Do I also need to put some type of gasket maker product like Permatex on there or will that just...
