    Looking at a boat...that sank!

Here's the story as I recall it. I do not know the owner of the boat you are looking at. The owner of the other boat involved is a friend of mine. The boat was moored in Oswego, NY along with several other boats. The moorings there are not regulated. The harbor has a break wall and is exposed...

    Looking at a boat...that sank!

I think I know this boat. Did this boat sink on Lake Ontario? While not as damaging as salt water, fresh water can have its own damaging effects. The wiring will certainly be suspect unless all the connectors were heat sealed, which I doubt. Count on rewiring the boat. Even though it has...

    Propane Outboard

The Lehr, Mercury, and Tohatsu are all made by Tohatsu. The propane versions have almost all the same parts as the gas versions, except the carburetor and fuel supply. I seem to recall reading that Tohatsu continues to market the propane version under their own brand.

Should the prop shaft flange be painted?

When I replaced the flange this spring I sprayed it with a corrosion inhibitor based on a reccomendation from Steve D'Antonio. He uses CRC Corrosion Inhibitor. Search his website for the full article on shafts, couplings, and props.

Flooding issues with Tohatsu 8 HP 2-stroke

I just came back from rescuing a dinghy. A neighboring sailor was trying to get back to his boat that was upwind in 10+ knots. His normally reliable motor kept stalling out. The problem it seems was the vent on his gas tank (internal tank), he had left it open the day before in the rain and...

Medicare requires a permanent residential address. What do cruisers do?

This is not quite accurate. Generally Medicare does not pay for medical care delivered outside of the US or its territories there are a few exceptions, see the link below. It does not matter where you live, only where the service is delivered. Some Supplemental Medicare programs do offer out of...

Flooding issues with Tohatsu 8 HP 2-stroke

White "smoke" is likely water vapor. On a 2 stroke the smoke should be blue. One of the issues with ethanol is getting water in the fuel. It may be that you do have water in the tank which causes the white smoke which is really steam. Older motors were not designed or built to deal with...

    B & G Zeus 3 intermittently powering down

The voltage drop can be the result of seemingly random events. For example the AP engages at the same time the refrigerator starts up, while some transmits on the VHF. Or if the batteries are small like Group 24s without much reserve capacity. Does this happen more towards the end of a sail or...

    B & G Zeus 3 intermittently powering down

Check all the connections to make certain they are good. A drop in voltage can cause electronics to power down. This an happen if there is a sudden increase in the load as well as if the batteries are old or in a low SOC. You can contact B&G tech support, but they will probably blame it on...

    Replacing Cabin Sole

As noted not all silicone caulks are the same. Caulks like DOW 795 and GE Silpruf have a different chemistry and properties than the cheap stuff bought in a hardware store. 795 and Silpruf are archectural glazing compounds Formulated to hold plate glass windows in place. They have both good...

Sanity Check: Winterization...Covering winches in a below freezing winter ? Maybe a cockpit tarp over the boom or unstepped mast ?

If you tarp the boat secure the tarp by tying down the edges and running lines over the tarp. This reduces billowing and reduces stress on the tarp, it lasts longer and is less likely to blow off. I have the same question as @thinwater’s about the trains. The will be a time in the spring and...

    Replacing Cabin Sole

once the surface silicone is removed sanding will help. Use a vacuum sander so the dust gets sucked up, this may reduce the amount of silicone that gets ground into the pan.
