    Tsunami warning

I rode out several in the Ala Wai in Honolulu. In the beginning, I joined the crowd going out and coming back, but that was a catastrophic madhouse. So, we decided to stay in the slip, inviting friends down to help tend the dock lines. We went up, down and up again several times, but nothing...

    Update

My wife, Nikki, and I are pleased that you are on the way to recovering. It is a time consuming and at times a frustrating road, but you are the sort that will most likely far exceed the doctors' expectations. All the best.

    I still don’t quite get rule #2…

Sorry, it just isn't all that simple. Motor vessels can under a number of situations, have priority over sailing vessels. And for most pleasure craft operators who also sail lakes, bays, rivers, estuaries, any of the nation's ICWs and/or harbors within US waters, there are TWO sets of ColRegs...

    I still don’t quite get rule #2…

When I dropped down to the minimum wake speed I'd go from 35+ to around 5.5 knots. It would take me forever to pass a vessel (not necessarily a sailboat) going 5ish knots.

    I still don’t quite get rule #2…

Really, if you think about it, this is nothing new to a US driver. Remember, we are also required to give preference to the vehicle on the right at an intersection.

    I still don’t quite get rule #2…

That's really an interesting comment. The ICW is a place where it takes two to tango, most of the time. I used to have 6 very fast Sport Fish boats that I delivered north each spring and brought back to Fla each fall. If the sailboat I was passing dropped his boat into neutral for a few seconds...

    I still don’t quite get rule #2…

As a life long professional mariner, one of the most difficult things I've had to do was forget the term "right of way" once the ColRegs updated to burdened and stand on. I would put forward that teaching using incorrect terms which need to be unlearned and new ones learned isn't the best way to...

Safest knot for dock line on a o ring...

If it was my boat, I'd use a bowline with fire hose for chafe gear, for a permanent dock line.

    A lost art: Conserving ice.

Fishermen have been using ice to keep their catch fresh and cool for quite some time, and for most of that time without insulation. I believe the secret to keeping ice for a longer time is using salt. Blocks are not as efficient as crushed ice (I suppose cubes would do) perhaps because of a...

    A never ending problem

Back in the '70s this was indeed a problem, especially when a gal strips down and swims across to your boat from the other dock, and your wife is sitting in the cockpit! I mean, helping her onto your boat was only the courteous thing to do, right? True story. I have often wondered what happened...

    Charter Sailing In Miami

I'd suggest you do a lot of research before you invest anything into this. Unless you have a nice trust fund to rely on or have enough relatives to keep you booked, you need to figure out how you are going to get customers to your boat. You could of course, put your boat on charter boat row at...

    Third Propulsion Option

One of the problems that comes to mind is moving the motor from the rail, to the bracket on the stern, underway. Not a huge problem in calm water, but the difficulty of the action increases dramatically with the weight of the motor in rougher water. Our third option is our inflatable, either...

    leaky boat

Take heart. There is a wonderful book called "The Boat that wouldn't float". After reading it, nobody will feel that their boat is anything less than the Queen's yacht.

    Spinnaker Emergency Brake Line

I should imagine any well built spinnaker sock would do the same thing, only from the top down. I've not sailed with one and tried it, but....
