Zinc's in fresh water

Do zinc's serve much of a purpose on a boat in Lake Michigan? I once had a PY26 with a yanmar and a zinc on the shaft. In 15 years it looked like new.

You should be using magnesium's for fresh water rather than zinc's. It's strange that here in Minnesota, our West Marine stores all stock zinc's but they have to special order mag's and even the store employees complain about the fact that they don't keep mag's in stock here.
