Hi all, I just removed my outboard. I'll be keeping it inside my house over the winter. What should I do to make sure it runs ok in the spring? Thanks, KP.

Drain the Carb

Hi THere, About the only thing I do for my Honda is to be sure to drain the Carb float bowl. I also make it a practice to mount my motor on a stand or end of a bench where I can give it a few pulls of the starter cord thru out the winter from time to time to help keep oil in the upper end. Some folks pull the spark plugs and give the holes in the head a shot of WD-40 then replace the plugs. This will keep any condensation or moisture away from the top of the Piston and Valves. If you keep gasoline over the winter be sure to put a stabilizer in it. Other than that I can't think of a thing Dave:)

Lube Lower Unit

With the engine off the boat, its also time to add fluid to the lower unit.

winter outboard

Try this site for loads of free info on outboard care:http://www.maxrules.com/fix.html They also sell manuals for outboards. I have read using stabilizers may or may not be a good idea as modern gasoline is a highly "perishable" commodity. That is, it does not stay fresh very long even with stabilizers. "Stale" gas does not improve by adding a stabilizer. A mechanic recommends burning unused gasoline in the tow vechicle. I use a diluted mixture of leftover gas/oil mix in my truck but it has a carburetor. I don't think it would be a good to burn a gas/oil mix in a fuel injected engine. see also: http://www.tidwellmarine.com/RFG.html http://www.api.org/consumer/handlefuel.htm

drain the carb. remove the spark plugs, put a tbl. spoon of oil in each cylinder, open the throttle, spin the starter and spray wd40 onto the carb at the same time. close the throttle and plug the spark plug holes or put the plugs back in. get new gas at the start of the season. john

Using leftover gas in a tow vehicle

On the issue of burning unused gas in the tow vehicle. I did it once sucessfully, when I mixed about 1 1/2 gallons of gas with oil into about 15 gallons of gas. The second time I tried it, I mixed about 3 1/2 gallons with about 3 to 5 gallons that was in the tank. The plugs in a 400 ci V-8 engine fouled. I have 2 good cars now and what I do is put stabilizer into the unused gas at the end of the season and in the spring it works fine. I usually seem to have about 3 gallons left at the end of the season, and in the spring, I just add another 3 gallons of fresh gas and the oil. Aldo
