My boat work has been subterranean. I usually pull my tarp off by now but with the near constant threat of rain, the only work I've done is under-tarp. As I store outside, I'm always wondering the benefits of shrink wrap over tarps. Tarps are noisy, in any wind and downright annoying in a blow. Shrink wrap is quiet.

On the other hand, a tarp allows me to easily un-tie the ends and roll back as much as I need - fore and aft - for ventilation. It can get hot beneath either a tarp or shrink wrap when the sun comes out. Tarp or shrink, what's your preference?

One coat of varnish over filler stain and 2 sealer coats. No sanding yet, easy roll and tipping beneath as raindrops patter on the tarp.

Varnish 1st coat. (1 of 1).jpg

For my sanity, I go above ground and check out launchings. The wet weather is delaying everybody.

Miles and miles of lines to sort out at the boatyard.

We launched a couple weeks ago. Just in time. The rains have overfilled the reservoir and the crane is closed to users right now. Something about operating an electric crane while standing in water. What could go wrong??

We launched yesterday. It was perfect weather, 5-10 knots of wind and mixed overcast/sun in the 50's. Launch was uneventful, and I had a nice afternoon bringing her home. So nice to be on the water again! (We chartered in March in the BVIs and it's just not the same level of relaxation and familiarity as on our own boat.)

The launch of Evelyn last year, our first year with her. I was impressed with the crew and how well they worked together. I wasn't there this year when they put her in. I did get there this past weekend to get it ready for this coming weekend, but it looks like weather will not be cooperating. Temps in the upper 40's and rain :/

Ok, so it's Tuesday but I may forget by tomorrow...

Ipe. Lots and lots of Ipe. 1600 lineal feet total.

Our old deck was Western Red Cedar 2 x 6 that lasted 30 years here in western Oregon. Actually it lasted about 28 years and we had to "walk light" the past couple. We considered replacing with the same or also looked at some of the Plastique stuff but could never see myself loving the fake wood.

The Ipe is 1 x 6 that we had milled with grooves on both edges to use thinks called "Ipe Clips" that are a special T-shaped fasteners that hold and space the planks. Considering the cost of the milling and Ipe Clips I am not so sure I would not have been just as well off to go with SS screws and bungs. It would have looked cool but it works out to 1758 screw/bungs (give or take a few).

The wood is heavy and really, really hard. Makes nasty dust when I cut it. At least it isn't like TomY's cockpit that would require real craftsmanship!

Looks like real craftsmenship to me, Hagar. Makes my knees hurt looking at it.

Looks good without the screws/bungs! My only personal experience is with the Trex. First deck was installed professionally, and they didn't give enough room between the planks - had to tear the whole thing up and re-fasten it with a wider gap (about 1100 screws). But Trex isn't a magic bullet. It's much better than PT yellow pine, but it still ages and weathers to the point where even pressure washing doesn't get it clean. Be curious to see how IPE makes out after 10 or 15 years.

Here you go Al. Too bad there isn't a sample of Trex in this 15 year test.

Been in the water and out 7 times so far since we bought her in March. This is from her first haul put in 7-8 years the first week we owned her. Not as pretty as most pictures but she is paid for and we plan to use her a lot. The one on the water is this weekend sailing along with my son in his new canoe.

@John Tubb - I'd like to gently suggest you load your pictures as thumbnails (an option that presents itself just after you load the pics). Then when they are clicked on, they will load at something a little less than full screen, and each person can make any adjustments they want. It also REALLY helps folks reading the forum on mobile devices, like phones and tablets.

No launch for us yet...
She's slowly making her way across the country. Did I say slowly?
We drove home from La Conner WA in 5 days towing our little Airstream Bambi. Esmeralde will take almost 2 weeks to move the same distance!
Waiting, anxiously waiting,
Bruce

Funny, I have the opposite reaction to the thumbnail thing.
I hate mobile sites and really dislike having to click on a thumbnail to see a picture. Typically it can't be zoomed in on once open and it is a p.i.t.a.
Really wish I could turn off mobile site renderings globally on my iPhone!
