Haven't even started it yet. We both want to visit a showroom somewhere and see the available colors/patterns in person. Haven't found anywhere nearby yet, and there are a million other things going on ... you know how it is.
Gene...wish I was closer, I'd do it for nuthin' (really!)...you've been a huge help to me on my quest to splash this tub!

I have the Hook 5 with the standard transducer that comes with it. I mounted the transducer under the forward V-berth using a silicone gel and then worked the transducer onto it to void out any bubbles. Works great !! Depth is accurate (checked with a lead-line) and scans look great also. Wonderful clarity. The chart plotter is cool, allowing me to mark spots in the channel with low water. The cost on these is great for all of the benefits and features.
Milton...good endorsement, thx for that, comfort level achieved!

Hey there @Kermit and @Crazy Dave Condon, so I've been a little lax in my installation activities and more prone to having fun on the boat. Last weekend I finally found a workable location for my depth sounder using the water filled baggie technique. I'm gonna make the installation tomorrow and was wondering if you could recommend the plumbers putty you've used. There's a slew of them on the market with various formulations. Here's the first group I've encountered:

Thanks in advance of your recommendation.

wayne....did mine in plumbers putty a couple weeks ago....used the Oaty, first one on your link (same one I've often used for household plumbing). The smaller container is plenty, nead it thoroughly and stick it down, works great.

FWIW, I have a Lowrance mark 4 Fishfinder/GPS unit, and I mounted the factory transom mount transducer inside the solid hull forward of our swing keel. I used 3M 4200 and it works well so far. The 4200 was what I had lying around, and I needed to get it working. I saw it as a good temp way to do it.
It appears to be reading accurately based on known soundings, But I plan on confirming it next year with a lead line. The marked channel into my marina, once past the breakwater, is very shallow in some areas. The low water this year, and the wind induced "tides", make it even more important.

Eventually I may remount it with epoxy like the manufacturer recommends.
By all accounts, removing the transducer from epoxy takes a quick rap with a hammer, without damage.

FYI, I have the same Lowrance and had the transducer JB epoxied shoot through the hull in my C15 and this worked fine. The C15 then sat in a barn up in the mountains in Colorado for a couple years (seeing some REAL cold temps during the winters) and I recently removed the setup. Turns out the transducer had popped out of the epoxy bed and I think the reason likely was the very cold temps during the winter. If the 4200 works (I think it would work just fine) and holds up through the MN winter, I would keep it over epoxy..

Ok, all set! Does this look like the right stuff?

Next question, beyond kneading the air out, is...should I just roll out a small (1.5x the transducer length) pancake thickness mat and press the transducer in the mat pressed into the hull? Or does the transducer get fully encapsulated in putty. Any tricks, tips, I should know about? Sanding, surface prep on the hull? Since I'm attaching to the hull, where there is a slight angle, should I use a bit more putty on one side and level the unit? Inquisitive minds need to know! The inclination angle is right at 10 degrees from level.

I just took out the whole contents, kneeded it into a ball thoroughly, put it onto a clean smooth spot in the bow (mine was just on the aft inside v-berth compartment, centered, stuck the putty into the f-glass, stuck the transducer into the putty, squished it down with some force, twisted it a bit and squished some of the "squeeze out" up and around the sides of the t-ducer...no need to fully encapsulate it...

I don't remember what I bought so it was probably this. Seein' how's I got it from my local Ace hardware store. http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/280988675840?dispItem=1&ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-117182-37290-0%2F2%3Fmpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fitm%252Flike%252F280988675840%253Fchn%253Dps%2526dispItem%253D1%26itemid%3D280988675840%26targetid%3D336374834599%26device%3Dm%26adtype%3Dpla%26googleloc%3D1025527%26poi%3D%26campaignid%3D885172041%26adgroupid%3D43192657126%26rlsatarget%3Dpla-336374834599%26abcId%3D1128996%26merchantid%3D8168124%26gclid%3DCjwKCAjwl_PNBRBcEiwA4pplRYSWVC-hp8HYYdHn5l1bcRu3HguD0DcQtW8tgPJ70ZVG1GIryAVmvhoCBAkQAvD_BwE%26srcrot%3D711-117182-37290-0%26rvr_id%3D1311735189290&chn=ps&dispItem=1&ul_ref=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F711-117182-37290-0%2F2%3Fmpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com%252Fitm%252Flike%252F280988675840%253Fchn%253Dps%2526dispItem%253D1%26itemid%3D280988675840%26targetid%3D336374834599%26device%3Dm%26adtype%3Dpla%26googleloc%3D1025527%26poi%3D%26campaignid%3D885172041%26adgroupid%3D43192657126%26rlsatarget%3Dpla-336374834599%26abcId%3D1128996%26merchantid%3D8168124%26gclid%3DCjwKCAjwl_PNBRBcEiwA4pplRYSWVC-hp8HYYdHn5l1bcRu3HguD0DcQtW8tgPJ70ZVG1GIryAVmvhoCBAkQAvD_BwE%26srcrot%3D711-117182-37290-0%26rvr_id%3D1311735189290&ul_noapp=true I doubt it would matter, though. Dave kneaded it real good. So far it's working great. He sorta encapsulated it but not completely. He also sanded the fiberglass a heckuva lot more than I would have. I'm glad he did it instead of me since it's working great after 3 years.

That is the longest URL I have ever seen to lead someone to a tub of plumbers putty. Too funny! Seriously though I spent $1.00 more than your jar. We'll give my tub a try tomorrow and I'll actually attempt to take some pics of the install.
