Transducer or Instrument

My depth instrument, which has worked just fine until recently, will light up as usual when turned on but just show dashes instead of a depth. Is there an easy, simple way to tell if the problem is the transducer or the instrument? The boat is in the water.

Thanks!

Seems like either there is crud blocking the transducer, or you have an open connection between the transducer and the instrument. One culprit is the connectors at the back of the instrument either unplugged or a broken wire right at the point that it is supposed to be connected to the plug. The wire may look like it is attached, but isn't.

If flashes means getting power but not getting signal for some reason and try going thru the different settings on the depth instrument.

Is the Raymarine?
With our st-60, if the unit is turned off and back on in water deeper than it can read, it shows the three dashes. When it's too deep normally it shows the last reading and a note, "last depth".

I live in Florida and boat is in water 3 years before new bottom paint and have bottom cleaned by diver every 6 to 8 weeks and don't bottom paint or cleaning bottom will help.
Try calling ray marine tech support or airmar at tech for testing the transducer or maybe a bad connection on wiring from corrosion.

What is the transducer? Do you put it in a thru hull, or is it a shoot thru the hull transducer? The latter requires a watertight seal on the mounting bracket and some liquid inside the bracket that holds the transducer.

What is the transducer? .
Simply put, the transducer is the sending unit for the instrument. In most cases it is a complete through hull module. Sometimes they are bedded to the interior of the hull and don't have a through hull.
