ST 6000 vs ST 7000

My ST 6000+ is beginning to show a fade area in the center. I just read about Dan Gerhaert and I could send it to him. But should I consider alternatives? The rest of the unit has been working fine for many years. Can I and should I upgrade the control head to ST 7000? Or something else? What would I gain?
