On my 1985 Mac 25, inside the lazerette there is a fairlead and a cleat. (see photo). I can't for the life of me figure out the purpose for this, what line is this meant to control?

You can run a line through the fairlead up to the laz lid, essentially locking it from the inside.
There should be a fitting under the lid to facilitate attaching one end of the line that threads through the fairlead to the cleat. Pretty basic but pretty effective.
