Sketchy upwind, blistering downwind

Here's a fun sequence from our race last night. Windward/Leeward 5. Our first upwind was sketchy; thought we played the big shift well, but lost out to boats that stayed left. Oh well! Anyway WAY behind on our scratch boats at the windward mark, they looked like a DOT on the horizon as we popped our kite. That's one of them under our spinnaker!

But we stay focused and settle in. We're very quick downwind, and making our final gybe inside of them puts us inside sailing less distance with mark rights. We douse later and nail it, and they owe us mark room. We are ready for upwind at the mark, and never see them again. Winning!

nice jib set and douse, also keeping tight on the exit at the mark...nothing like a boat on your hip to motivate the crew.

Indeed. We usually ace 99% of our maneuvers. We were discussing this on our crew FB group, and we noted that we started the douse 40 seconds after the other boat did (big gainer), but still were done BEFORE them. 20 seconds to get the kite down and ready for upwind!
