Shuttle boat fire

Driving home yesterday saw this large plume of black smoke coming from my neighborhood. Thinking this looks like smoke from a burning boat, then saw the CG plane circling overhead, I was getting worried as there is a small marina across the lake in my backyard. Maybe less than 1000 ft. Turned out it was the casino shuttle that caught fire at the mouth of the river. By the time I drove the 1 minute to the river, she had burned to the waterline. 50 people on board. Unfortunately, one fatality.
Here's the local news feed.

Just to further clarify the Deceased was not one of the original 15 taken to area hospitals by the paramedics. She had said she felt OK and refused care, went home and later that evening had to be taken to the hospital. The cause of death was not reported but it is very likely that she passed away as a consequence of the fire, jumping off the boat, wading to shore in heavy silt or the frigid water temps. She either had a pre-existing condition or suffered some internal damage during the ordeal. There at no guarantees that if she would have originally gone to the hospital that they would not have released her to go home. We unfortunately see these type of delayed deaths after being released from hospitals after automobile accidents.

Fortunately, they were only in about 3-4 feet of water and about 100 yds from shore. But, still the same, jumping from 10-12 ft into 3-4 feet of 59 degree water to escape an on board fire is still very scary and dangerous. Our prayers go out to that poor 42 year old woman's family.

with the delayed death, is there a common cause? heart lungs etc, seems it should be easier to "see" in advance

Not unusual in hypothermia cases for someone to seem fine and then go into arrest.
It is real important to keep a hypothermia case prone and not moving. Look up "Cold Water Boot Camp" on You Tube
The folks who did the training were at a US Sailing Symposium I went to a few years ago and It changed my mind about wearing a PFD all of the time, at least when it is cold in the water like below 75 degrees.

the news last night reported that the captain restarted the engine (while the boat was on fire) and steered it closer to shore. Otherwise it would have been quite a bit further from shore.

I wade in 3-4ft of 59dg water regularly.
I did that also while growing up on the New England coast but the difference was that I did it voluntarily, not forced to jump off a burning boat while scared out of my wits.
