Seawater Pump Identification?

I replaced the impeller on my Westerbeke seawater pump, part number 33636. Now the back of the pump is dripping. I assume the "lip seal" is leaking.

This pump is discontinued, but the rebuild kit is still available, but at about $175. from Westerbeke.

The pump that has superseded this is part number 048080, for $495. from Westerbeke.

Can someone recommend an alternate source for this pump? How would I go about finding the OEM pump that is this one, i.e, direct from Obendorfer, or someone else?

Thank you!

By the way, is there any way to stop this drip without having any parts on hand? Would grease slow it down? (I've heard grease is bad for the rubber parts, though.)

Will this pump fail catastrophically as a result of the drip, or is the only issue the dripping water?

Thanks again,

jv

My old style sherwood dripped for the last half of one season, no issue really as my temp reading was fine. Key question is are you seeing elevated water temperature on your gauge? If not above 175-180 I would keep going and pull the pump season end and send it to Depco in FL. (Of course, keep an eye on the temps) I did so 6 years ago and they were great and cost effective. You get new parts and a new paint job even.

Thank you. I might do that! I was thinking, though, I'd like to have a spare pump on board.

No problem with temps. Actually, since I cleaned the strainer and changed the impeller the temp seems to have dropped, form about 180º to 175º or so.

Those proprietary pumps are made specifically for Westerbeke engines under contract so everyone gets them from the same source, Westerbeke.. The old one was not very reliable the replacement is much better.. I rebuilt the old style twice before going with the new style...

So, the consensus that you can't get this pump from Depco, you'd have to get it from Westerbeke, as said by @Maine Sail ?

Update: I just called Depco Pump, and spoke with a very helpful marine service specialist. He said that they Westerbeke pumps are proprietary, and that they stock them, but the prices were the same as anywhere else.

The pump is made for Westerbeke by Johnson. The new pump is 48080, the kit that includes the mounting gasket is $518, part number 37431. There's an alternative, which is made by JNP, p/n 48080-J, $470.25, but you'd have to use JNP's rebuild kit or replacement parts.

I know how to rebuild a pump, I just want another pump so I can quickly swap it out. But I'm not sure that's going to happen this time, because I'm not sure it's worth re-installing the 33636 after rebuilding, based on MaineSail's experience.

No, not at all, just that Depco also has to buy it from Westerbeke or a Westerbeke dealer because it is a proprietary Westerbeke part... The pump casting is made to fit a number of Mitsubishi blocks that Westerbeke marinizes. The pump manufacturer, Johnson, can't bypass Westerbeke and sell direct to anyone else such as Depco.
