Raritan PHii / how do I get this cap off?

Part 1204B in the picture.
It's the cap under the flush selector.
It won't budge. Can't get a grip on it with any tool due to limited space and no corners on the round cap.
Don't want to break it.
Gasket is leaking. Need to adjust tightness or replace gasket.

A large set of Channelock pliers does it for me.
When you get the new O ring in, gently tighten. Very easy to distort the new seal.

Ok I can see how that could work.
I have a large channel locks in the home tool box.
Will just have to be careful not to damage the cap.
Thanks.

If you have a flat rubber jar cap remover, you can try those before; and you can, if that doesn't work alone, as gently as you can, use the rubber to keep the channel locks from damaging the plasticity as you unscrew the cap.

Don't remove the selector. Just the valve body cap under it.

The selector has to come off, otherwise the plug valve will try to turn ??

Ok that was a reasonable suggestion.
I don't have one but I was able to use a rubber mouse pad, which I think is the same material.
Got a good grip on the cap with this. But still won't move. I think the channel locks will do it when I bring them from home, using the rubber as a protector as you said.

Others: yes the selector knob has to come off. It's on top of the cap, not only blocking access but even if I could unscrew the cap, I couldn't lift it off with the knob in the way.
Anyway it's just one screw. 10 seconds.

During my Navy days the solution was "Get a bigger hammer". Of course then you could destroy the part and then go down to supply, get a $1,000 replacement part. Finish the job and go on liberty.

I have a strap wrench, with a rubber coated strap, like a fan belt. In a pinch, you can use a fan belt and vise grip.

Ayup. Jobs are kinda daunting when you've never done it before.
Peggie's right. RTFM. "F" stands for "funny".
?
Taking the selector knob off was not the daunting part.
The issue is that the cap under in won't come off.
Before I break it off, wanted to get suggestions for its removal.

What would be miserable now  but funny later  is if I broke it and rendered the head inoperative.
For I'm cruising now and waterborne.

Righty-tighty, lefty-loosy.
If it breaks, it probably needed fixing anyway.

Performed my first sea-strainer cleaning day before yesterday. Getting the hoses off the barbed fittings was hell, but they finally came off. Been dreading that job for no real reason, other than unfamiliarity. Lost a 10mm socket off the dock, wrote it off.
Dockmate lent me a magnet and after 5 minutes of fishing, socket on! :hijack:
