Properly tying off tiller at mooring

First time putting my Catalina 22 in the water last night. I'm trying to recall the proper way to tie the tiller securely when the boat is moored. It was essential practice at our sailing club to tie the tiller down to keep the rudder from getting damaged or creating havoc against the boat from waves and weather.

I'm thinking it is just a line running across the beam of the cockpit between two cleats with a clove hitch tied around the tiller. Does that sound right? Is there a more secure knot that should be around the tiller instead?

Thanks to any expertise offered.

And that's another way, too!

I've toyed with the idea of converting my Tartan 3800 to tiller steeing, but my wife strenuously objected. I think it's because she doesn't want yet another "project," but also I think she likes the big, 40" (?), leather covered stainless destroyer wheel. But, there's just a beauty about a tiller steered boat.
