I wanted to replace the bilge covers but didn’t want to spend a fortune on real harwood. I decided to experiment with a section of red oak plywood I picked up from Home Depot. After cutting to size I rub stained it with Minwax Sedona red. Two coats of helmsman clear varnish. I wanted to add the appearance of secondary wood so I taped out some striping and sprayed almond colored dupli color paint. Removed the tape and let dry for a day. I then added more coats of varnish. I was afraid that the varnish would eat the paint but it didn’t.
I plan on rolling flex seal on the bottom of the boards to protect from moisture.
I detailed this just in case someone else wants to take the cheap route like me.
