M taking ownership of a C30T on Friday, and will be spending my first few days on the boat next weekend.

I'd like to bring a microwave with me for my first trip; can anyone tell me the height of the counter just o the right of the ladder, or better still, recommend a specific brand and model that fits that space?

Thanks,

Bob

That dimension shouldn't have changed from the MKI to the MKII.

I would suggest not keeping the microwave there permanently. It will move around, get in the way of the ice box, and the trash shoot.

I have a microwave that I store in the trunk.....rear quarter berth. I never use it since I spend most of my time on the hook. I have found it just as easy to use the burners or the oven to heat up the food.

Another spot for the microwave is right above the hanging locker. It fits and it is a good place for it.

I just installed a new microwave, in that very space, there was an old one there before.
I installed a Sunbeam, compact microwave, SBMW709BLS, Dimensions are 17 and 13/16 wide, and 10 and 5/16 in tall, and 14 inches deep. got it on sale locally for about $60. The old one was 9X18. both of them extend into the lazarette, and have to be secured there.

I had mine in that very spot but took it out as it took up to much counter space Diid not have to secure it as rubber feet worked great through some real rough weather You may want to look at recessing it into the lazzarette m mine would not fit even if i cut out rear wall
email me if you need any more info i have done a lot of renoes

I measured my 1988 Mk II for a microwave, but haven't found one that will fit yet. The area to the right of the companionway measured 12 3/8" high, 18 1/2" deep, and width could go as much as 20". Maybe the Sunbeam mentioned would fit.

Here's what my PO did and I liked it. The Origo alcohol burners and a charcoal grill on the rail are all I need for weekending on the hook, anchored up some creek here on the Bay somewhere. We use the microwave much more frequently than the oven at home, and it's the same on the boat when the shore power's tied in at a marina. It saves on counter space.

That's very cool; I may have to consider doing that...

My microwave is their too. Malwart sells a bunch of small microwaves that will fit for around 50 bucks. Recessing it into the aft lazarette is a cool idea. I've seen a pic posted that someone also recessed a window A/C unit into that space. They vented it by opening the storage locker hatch. Good alternative rather than blocking the companionway with an A/C unit.

I bought one, haven't brought it the boat yet though. I'd hate to take up my lazarette space, and my boat has a refrig. unit right where the hole would be...

Coriolis,
I checked online and that's a 700w microwave. Do you find it does a good job or do you find it underpowered?

Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim;
I find it works fine, I am not thawing anything frozen, use it mainly to quick heat coffee water when I am on shore power.

Maybe no microwave at all!

When we first got our boat we intended to get and install a microwave in the trash shoot, but never found the exact size and along the way found that we don't miss having one at all! We have a coffee maker that sits on a rubber mat that gets shoved glass carafe in and it fits nice and tight and does not budge, no matter how crazy things have gotten. (we learned the first time out that the carafe needs to be wedged in to the corner.....glass EVERYWHERE!) Anyway, we don't miss a microwave in the least... in fact, we love using the burners and stove if we do want to cook, which is usually on a long trip on the water, not in our slip!

Sometimes just living with the boat as it is for a little while makes it clear what you really do want and need.:)

I have to agree. I take a microwave around with me and never use it! I have a grill and I use my stove. In the spring and fall I will use my oven some.

For the money, the grill is the best thing since sliced bread. I use it a lot to cook and heat things. This keeps heat out of the cabin in the summer (it can get right warm in the Chesapeake Bay during July and August).

My boat has been on several long Chesapeake Bay cruises since I bought her in 2004. I find cockpit cushions to take up a lot of space so I store them in my truck for long cruises. I take the small blue cushions and use them most of the time.

Storage is mostly kept in the back quarter berth. I put my extra jib and my luggage in that area. I also keep a big fan (since I don't have AC) that I plug in when in a slip. The micro wave sat back there when not in use but I have started removing it because I don't use it.

My two cents, get a pressure cooker (great for summer cooking), a grill, and use your stove. It will serve you well if you decide to do some real cruising and stay on the hook most of the time.

My lazzerette is valuable storage space too. I keep two folding bikes in there and other supplies.

The pressure cooker for, over the stove's burners? Or an electric one? I could see some roast chicken and rice in that pot... yes, indeedy. :D

I don't think I'll put a microwave thru the wall, I want that storage space.

With a 15-year-old, a microwave is critical for mac & cheese... :)

I'll have to give the oven a try; baked chicken and rice on the water sounds perfect...

Boat arrives on the 28th, can't wait!

Longterm, no matter what you eat or how you prepare it, you are going to have a great time. If this is your first boat, you really have no idea of the joys ahead of you, congrats and just enjoy every minute.:D
