Memorial Day

If you've ever wondered why AMVETS sell poppies on Memorial Day....
John McCrae was serving as a Major and a military doctor and was second in command of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery. The brigade had arrived there in the early hours of 23 April 1915. It is believed that the death of his friend, Alexis Helmer, was the inspiration for McCrae's poem “In Flanders Fields”.

The Flanders American War Cemetery and the largest British Commonwealth War Cemetery in the world are in Flanders, Belgium and hold the graves of fallen WWI and WWII solders. The reference to the red poppies that grew over the graves of fallen soldiers resulted in the remembrance poppy becoming one of the world's most recognized memorial symbols for soldiers who have died in conflict. The poem and poppy are prominent Remembrance Day symbols throughout the Commonwealth of Nations, particularly in Canada, where "In Flanders Fields" is one of the nation's best-known literary works. The poem is also widely known in the United States, where it is associated with Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, while taking time to remember why we observe it.

As always Peggy we can count on you to remember our veterans. Thanks.
The first two items we had to memorize at the Naval Academy were the oath of a Midshipman and the Navy Hymn. For our service members plying the oceans this weekend...
Eternal Father strong to save
Who bidst the mighty ocean deep
It’s own appointed limits keep
O hear us when we cry to thee
For those in peril on the sea.

First learned June 30, 1969. Some things you never forget.

A day to remember all who have come before and made the journey through life, uniformed or not.

On the radio this morning I heard about the troubles of the Brits and their wish in leaving the European Union. Seems the Union wants to extract a pound of flesh. The troubles are so that the Prime Minister is retiring after 3 years.

The woman being interviewed was in tears. She could not understand. She wondered, "Don't they remember we saved their butts? Our young men died to set them free. You'd think they would at the least let our PM talk to them, not make her sit in the hall while they discuss the issue."

Let us never forget the sacrifice our young men and women have made in the name of freedom for all of mankind.

The EU without the UK is like a dead man walking. The rest of the EU is socialist leaning governments overrun by uncontrolled immigration from the Middle East. Germany has never really recovered from the East Germany reunion. To the East they are surrounded by the resurgent former soviet states. The UK must escape from the EU morass to survive as the UK.
