Very interesting. I don't think the squids on the Midway way back in the 70's even knew this. Us jarheads didn't. We would pull into ports like Hong Kong, the PI etc and they got all sorts of different tats. I never saw anything even applicable to a modern ship. e.g. shellbacks, anchors, swallows....
