You were 100% correct, Terry. Went down this morning and worked it on from the female and as you stated. A bit of force required to work it slowly around like mounting a tire on a rim. The collar gives just a bit. Came out fine. Thanks for the help and sorry to bother everyone for something so simple, but the West Marine guy "aided and abetted" also by telling me it obviously would not go on that way....hard to find good help these days.

I remember leaving it out in the sun to make the yellow plastic pliable. Then a lot of cussin when it came to squeezing it on.

Yes, I admit to a small cuss word or two, but then it gave in. Should be good for another 23 years at which point it will be someone else's problem. Thanks again to all who weighed in....
