When checking the oil level on this engine, should you insert the dipstick all the way into the hole, pull it out and look at the level, or insert only until the rubber seal on the dipstick touches the block? The manual doesn't specify....

All the way down. That's standard on all dipsticks except some that screw in, where the manual usually specifies.

on yan mars you must NOT screw the dipstick in as it will give a false reading. on something this important, get some advice on your particular engine from a manufacturer's rep --not the internet.

On Universal engines the dipstick goes all the way in.

Agreed all the way in for the engine. But unscrewed for the Hurth transmission
