I looked at a Catalina 34 today with the 23 hp Universal. It's a 1990 boat with a mix of MKI and MKII characteristics- open stern, smaller engine, desk stepped mast.

My main concern is the cruising speed with that engine vs the 30 hp. What do you think?

You'll do fine. It will push you at hull speeds in most conditions I have the same engine on my 36 without the XP and two less HP and its works fine. Sometimes I wish for a Beta 30 or 35 but not enough to do anything about it. And your engine is 7years newer than mine

Les is right. I have Hull 224, 1986, M25 21 hp. Sailed from SF to Vancouver Island last summer. Still here! 165 engine hours for that trip, now on my way back to home in Maple Bay from the San Juans to the Gulf Islands. Just hit 3300 engine hours. An M25XP will do just fine.

As frequent visitor here, you must know about our little C34 website, right? :)

More than enough.
Especially if well maintained, developing full power.
I "only" have 14hp, 2 cyl. Have never once needed to hold full throttle. Cruise at 5.5 knots at 2/3 throttle 2,200rpm (3,200rpm redline), developing about 10hp and 27 pounds feet.
30ft 10,000lb wet and geared up.

I'm reassured and ready to go back for a second look. I'll also check the C34 website.
