Highly recommend servicing your winches - every year if you sail a lot and/or race. Every few years if you don't. I did ours last summer, before the San Juans trip, and boy did it make a difference! They hadn't been serviced since we bought the boat so they really needed it. Service kits include new pawls, springs, etc.

It doesn't even take that long, unless yours are as gunked up as mine were. I spent a good 30-40 minutes on each trying to get the old grease off with mineral spirits and a toothbrush.

Good thought on regular servicing winches.

Here's a tip for those of us who may need to service them while a float. Winchs have lots of small parts that like to fly apart (overboard) and sink.

Take an appropriately sized cardboard box. Cut a round hole in the bottom just big enough to fit over the winch base. Now, take winch apart. If you have chosen your cardboard boxing carefully as to size, it will restrain any wayward pieces.
