Hello. I'm looking at buying a used 2013 Yamaha F-4 outboard. It's a 4 HP motor. It would replace my older Yamaha 6 HP motor. Do you think this is powerful enough to do the basic work I need? Things like in/out of slip, distance motoring when wind is dead, etc. Thanks very much for any advice you can give. Ed Connors/Chesapeake Bay.

I use a Tohatsu 4hp for my local lakes and Ca delta. It does just fine going hull speed at 1/2-3/4 throttle. Most people will agree that if you're anywhere with tides, swells or currents to go with a 6hp.

Should work for what you describe. We originally has a 5HP on the Mac26. Make sure the shaft is long enough.

It is a matter of correctly propping the engine to obtain maximum performance. The correct pitch will allow the engine to reach its maximum rated RPM without overreving.

The tohatsu 6 hp sailpro will move my Cat 22 at around 4.8 knots in moderate waves and current at about 1/3 throttle. Close to hull speed of 5.5 at nearly 1/2 throttle , over that no increase in speed just lots of noise. Fuel consumption is really low, cruising for 4 days with probably 6-8 hours of motoring besides a little noodling around while in and out of marinas and anchoring only used up about 4 gallons.

2 horsepower for every 1,000 lbs displacement. If you are fighting 20 kts of wind and 3 foot chop on the Chesapeake Bay your outboard is going to pull out of the water regardless of horsepower.
