Installing Vent in Fore Hatch

I have a Hunter 33.5 (1994), with the flush deck mounted hatches that Hunter used for several years. I am thinking of installing a solar vent in the fore cabin hatch to increase ventilation and circulation. I have searched the archives on the subject and believe I am going to remove the hatch from the boat back it with some wood and use a hole saw to make the cut in the hatch- slow speed and liberal cooling plus tape in the cutting area seem to be part of the best practices. The one thing that concerns me is the age of the hatch (1994) and whether 24 years in the elements will lead to the hatch cracking or shattering when subjected to the stress of the saw- any thoughts to allay or confirm my fears ??

Thanks
