Hi all,
I have an 84 Hunter 37 c with a yanmar 3qm30 f diesel - how often should I change my transmission fluid and how often should it be checked? does it get pumped out of the sump where the dipstick is like the oil?
thanks,
Jim

You need to pump the oil out from the dipstick. The capacity is about 1.5L and you can use ATF multivehicule in there if I recall correctly. The owners manual says it should be changed every 100 hours.

Check the tag on the transmission. My 2QM tranny was a Kanzaki and used the same oil as the engine.

I have a 1983 37c with the 3QM30F engine also. See attached picture of the transmission label.

Good post, I need to add this to my spring maintenance.

I also have a 1983 37c with 3QM30F and it takes ATF (automatic transmission fluid). I don't believe brands make much difference but do believe in sticking to one brand. The first time I double changed with Penzoil Dexron 111 and have stuck with that.

The picture was from when I first got my boat, it is cleaner now......

Your transmissions are very different from my 1979. Obviously yours uses ATF as seen on the label. My label was on the side and said nothing about lubricant. When I sold the engine and tranny so went the manuals. I wanted to verify what it said about using regular motor oil. Other guys with "old" Cherubinis will vouch for it. And like John, my picture was taken before I owned it, during the survey. :)

I changed the ATF oil in my transmission a few years ago because it had got quite dirty - more brown than red (and its probably time again - thanks for the reminder!) Anyway, I used Dexron II. I found a drain plug somewhere on the bottom and managed to fit a drain pan cut from an old Tide liquid detergent container underneath. As I recall, it was less hassle than changing the engine oil. I would love to be able to drain the engine sump from below!
