5 miles

My slip is 5 miles from my driveway and I often spend every weekday night on my boat.I make coffee and a breakfast on the boat in the morning and than take a shower at the harbor house and the go to work. It takes me less time to get to work from the marina than it does from home. Of course I spend then weekend at the boat too. I do most of my sailing on the weekends but do some evening sailing during the week. My H310 is like a second home and I just like to hang out at the marina and I am not the only one... The Odyssey is only in the water for five months out of the year and I like to be with her. Steve, s/v The Odyssey, H310

10 miles

The boat's only 10 miles away, so we get to the boat most weekends and even after work sometimes. Since the boat is so close, she's easy to get to if some maintenance needs to be done or I want to make sure all's secure before a big blow. Now don't get too jealous. The price we pay for closeness is a very limited sailing area. Lake Hopatcong in NJ may be the biggest lake in NJ, but it's still a pretty small lake. Then again, our H26 is trailerable, so open waters are just down the highway. Ron Mehringer H26 Hydro-Therapy

'Bout 24 Miles

Most weekends find us there, as they have for the last 20 years. As the boats have gotten larger, and living has replaced camping, we spend more time at the boat but probably less time on the water. More frequent longer trips, though. Major hassle is LA traffic, not the distance. That 25 miles should be close to that in minutes, but can easily run three times that and it is a major attitudinal challenge........ RD

Walking distance

While our boat is walking distance, mostly we tend to either ride our bikes or drive the few short blocks. Every other weekend or so we will either day sail on the harbor or go cruising depending on our work schedules and/or weather. During the week, we might do takeout dinner on our boat or, in the summer, go out for an evening sail/swim. With our boat being so close, it is either a dockside project or out on the water that takes us to the boat. If we in a lazy hangout mode, we usually do so swinging at anchor.

65 miles from boat

We drive 1.75 hours, but get there every weekend, early Spring, late Fall, spend long weekends, sail, hang-out, no maintenance !!! Have friends with boat nearby, sail together alot, anchor, lunch, no schedules!!! We consider it our (inexpensive, relatively speaking) house on the Lake. Most of the time we are the only stay-over-nighters in the marina.

1 If By Land, 2 If By Air

When I drive up from the Allen, Tx it takes about 1 hr and 15 min. If I fly up, it takes about 30 min. Airplanes are faster, but they can also fly a straight path to the marina. For the weekend, I drive up. Partially because of all the items that seem to be needed. When I work on the boat, I generally fly. Make a day trip out of it. Up at least 3 weekends out of the month.

Wrong Question

The question should have been "How far from your boat do you live". With a 20 year wait for moorings on the River Hamble in the UK I deliberately moved house to be within 1 mile of boat and club. Which I visit several times per week.

666

It is exactly 333 miles from my driveway to my parking spot at Marina San Carlos. Kinda scary, 666 miles round trip. We make the 6.5 hour trip about every 6 week in the winter and every other week in the summer. Who says you can't teach scuba diving from a 29.5 foot sail boat? Russ Her Diamond Ring

I Can See it

I can see my boat from my house but I have to drive through the golf course to get to the Marina. I check it about four times a week. If it were any closer it would be too tempting and I never would get anything done.

Ah Phil - again

Phil, After reading the posts on this article, including my own, I think it might be beneficial to add the other type of “head” specialist to you list of “Site Helpers”. Sign me up for the group rate!! Compulsive/Obsessive Greg

I guess I'm lucky too

About 70'. I live in development build around lagoons. Every house has a bulkhead/dock. I originally told my soon to be wife I wanted to live on a boat. Guess who won that battle. So this is the next best thing.

10 min. walk

My boat is but a 10 min. walk, and I go there every day. Some times just to check on it some times to hang around and some time to sail or work on it. It is part of my dog walk. It's important to remind my self what the hell I'm working for, Dreams being what they are. O some day.

180 Feet

My 1983 H20, Hokey Pokey, waits patiently for me at the end of her dock, which starts at the edge of my back yard. Fortunately for both of us, she doesn't have to wait too long between visits - at least daily - sometimes for a sail, sometimes just for cleaning, maintenance, or whatever needs doing... see Hokey Pokey at www.digitalexp.com/~users/ehubbard then click on Hokey Pokey.

When we can

We live almost exactly 20 miles from the marina, but it takes 25 - 30 minutes to drive there, about 7 miles in town and 13 miles highway, the last 8 miles in farm county. We get out to the boat on average at least once a weekend during our season,(late March until the reservoir is drained the 1st Monday of October), and 2 days a week in midseason. Plus occassional weekday evening trips during hot weather. Inclement spring weather and kids sports sometimes interfer (1 weekend last year we went to 7 soccer games from Friday evening until Sunday mid-afternoon) since the kids need the emotional support more than the boat and I do. Nothing exciting about the trip, although the Oregon Country Fair site is a few miles west of the marina, making choice of route that weekend important to avoiding traffic jams. It can be fun to be sailing in warm spring weather and see the snowy tops of the Cascades about 70-80 miles away. Our boat time, for both daysails and overnight trips, have a kid based routine - give the kids time to swim (freshwater marina, we're the furtheest slip in, or at the swimming area a few hundred yards away) and play. Then its parents time (actually sailing). Maintaince and hanging out happens while the kids are swiming and playing. As has been stated, this is our "house" on the lake. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo

Not often enough

Hard to answer a 72 mile trip - is it under 100 or over 50..... I wouldn't want to have to travel any further. It is close enough that a day trip to the boat is manageable. I'll make the trip alone, with the wife, with the dog or some combination there of. During the warmer weather (March - November) I like to make it up at least one day of the weekend. Sailng, working on the boat or just hanging out, it all is worthwhile for a 135 minute trip.

Year 'Round Weekender!

It only takes 1 hour and 45 minutes from Greensboro,NC and I do it EVERY weekend no matter what! I have acquired a new family among the sailors at my marina and we do it all! We hang out, sail and do maintanence when neccessary (which is about every weekend). There is also an Irish pub at the marina with bands on weekends- the place is heaven!
