This is the problem. I believe the cause is a couple things 1, over tightening the straps 2, whoever rebuilt the trailer should not have built the wood parts that are covered with carpet to come together in the center? I think the V of the hull was crushed in part because the boat was not perfectly centered on the trailer I’m confident I can fix it; I’m just not sure how to go about it. My first impulse is to grind/cut the hull back into shape, then use some kind of putty to fill and reform it then fiberglass and paint. But I am worried that water from the ballast will cause problems on the inside like delaminating the gelcoat from the fiberglass? Or any number of problems I can’t imagine. Does anybody have any insight how this can be fixed and what materials to use? Also I would love to see a photo of a typical MacGregor trailer. My first plan is to replace the rotting 2x4s with presser treated 2x6s

boat model and year, please

some models want the bunks in a V, and some want bunks front to aft. Macgregor didn't build the boat structure strong enough to sit on any old traler.. macgregor-sailor might have some examples to look at for repair/correction. if the trailer doesn't fit the boat it will cause problems

The model is Mac 25 - Year1998

Thanks Mr Bill The model is Mac 25 - Year1998 It is the original trailer to the boat I am sure but previous owners have done a little work on it over the years. Should the bunks (Thanks now I know what to call them) touch in the center? It seems problematic to me anywhere I can go to get info on patching it? I will send a note to MacGregor to see what they say Thanks

Fixing crack

First: What side of Phoenix do you live (as you can see, I live in Mesa). Your registration shows you have a Mac26 but you say this boat is a 25. If it has water ballast it is a 26. Can you find the crack from inside? To do correct repairs you will need to get at both sides for this problem. As far as fixing, anything fiberglass can be fixed. However, you do NOT want to use a filler to start with. This is a structural area and will need "woven" glass material on both sides. The "putty" should only be used for fairing. If I can email you, maybe we can get together and get it done. You can also see my trailer. I have a 25 Venture. The bunks run fore/aft and work great.

1998?

They weren't building 25's in '98. Anyway, I hope you can get it fixed, it sure looks bad to an inexperienced fiberglass person like me.

Sorry - Year1987

I don't know how or why I typed '98 except that I am at work and it is distracting me from more important things like day-dreaming about my boat! I know it is a 1987, I think it is a Mac 25

Keel

A 25 will have a heavy (usually cast iron) swing keel with a winch inside to raise and drop it - Is that what yours has?

It has a daggar board not a swing keel

I'm learning... OK so it is a 26. It does have water ballast and no swing keel. You can not see the hole from the inside of the boat because of the ballast. Bob, I sent you an email, I can't add a profile right now because the site is being worked on.

Trailer looks fine - where is this damage?

The trailer looks fine - is this damage in front/behind the dagger board slot? Is the frame member in your picture the front or back one? Really odd damage to be trailer induced - without anything else (especially the ballast tank) broken. Chris

ok, 1987 26D,

I have a 1988 26D. with the stock trailer. it has 2 large Vee's about mid point in the daggerboard, and about 8" aft of the fill plate. the V supports are PT 4x6" w/ carpet. in a pinch you can use some stryofoam stacked several inches thick to help support and soften pressure points. thats what I used between some lumber when I lifted my boat off the trailer. you may want to do that now to support the hull. a 1" sheet at HD is like 10 bucks. cut 8" strips and stack them up. it looks like you have cracks at the daggerboard, and would like to see more photos. might all be in the ballast, below water (no cutting, lets hope). good news is the D model should be the easiest to fix. good products: http://www.fgci.com/ moved boat back for painting.. maybe will help: http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/P1010011.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/P1010009.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/P1010006.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/P1010010.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/db1a.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/mactrl_l26.jpg http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/ftldiver2/MACGREGOR/0447a97a.jpg
