Oh good, thanks for your response. My thought is that if I already have a crack it's likely to get worse. Though it could've been that way for many years, no way to know, but I'd rather not take a chance.
Next time I step the mast I will check the length of the head stay with the extension just below the drum removed. I looks like it might be just the right length to not change the mast rack. I just hope the drum won't be too close to the deck.
